Battery Fortress | Napoleonic Fortification Protecting the Entrance to Milna
The Battery Fortress is located at Cape Zaglav, at the western entrance to the Milna harbor, one of the safest natural anchorages on the eastern Adriatic coast. Today, only its remnants are preserved, but the location and history of this site testify to the significant strategic importance that Milna held during the turbulent events of the early 19th century.
The fortress was built during the period of French administration in Dalmatia, during the Napoleonic Wars, when control of maritime routes became extremely important. The task of the Battery was to monitor the entrance to the Milna harbor and protect the ships that sought refuge here from storms or enemy attacks. Thanks to its deep and well-protected bay, Milna was one of the most important havens for ships in central Dalmatia at that time.
The location of the fortress was not chosen by chance. Cape Zaglav offers an excellent view towards the Split Gates, a maritime passage between Brač and Šolta through which merchant ships, naval fleets, and fishing boats have passed for centuries. From this vantage point, it was possible to monitor a large part of the surrounding waters and timely spot any approaching vessels.
The name "Battery" comes from the artillery battery that was once stationed at this site. Cannons were positioned here to defend the harbor entrance. Although no armaments are preserved today, the remnants of stone walls and defensive structures still remind visitors of the military function that this site had over two hundred years ago.
It is particularly interesting that during the Napoleonic period, Milna was an important point for the supply and movement of ships between the central Dalmatian islands and the mainland. Therefore, it is not surprising that the authorities of that time decided to establish a defensive fortification here.
Today, the Battery Fortress is an interesting destination for history enthusiasts, photographers, and nature walkers. The site can be reached on foot from Milna, with a path leading through an area covered with pine trees and Mediterranean vegetation. During the walk, beautiful views of the harbor, Marina Vlaška, ACI Marina Milna, and the surrounding islands unfold.
One of the reasons visitors come to Cape Zaglav is the panoramic view. From the site of the former fortress, one can see the Split Gates, the island of Šolta, the islet of Mrduja, and part of the open sea towards the Hvar Channel. For this reason, many consider it one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Milna area.
Although today only the remnants of the former fortification are visible, the Battery Fortress remains an important part of the history of the place. It serves as a reminder of a time when Milna was a strategically important port that needed to be defended and controlled, and of a time when the fates of the Dalmatian islands were often decided at sea.
For visitors who wish to learn about the lesser-known history of Brač, the Battery Fortress represents an interesting blend of military heritage, nature, and panoramic views that reveal why Milna has been one of the most important maritime locations on the island for centuries.
