Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Selca – A Historical and Cultural Landmark

Situated in the historical center of Selca on the eastern side of Brač Island, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel stands as a significant religious structure. Dedicated to Our Lady of Carmel, the patron saint of Selca, the church plays a central role in the community, especially during the feast day celebrated on July 16th, coinciding with the local festivities and the municipality's day.

The original structure was built in the 17th century and has undergone several expansions and renovations over the years, reflecting the growth and development of Selca. Major enhancements occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries, a period marked by economic prosperity driven by stone masonry and trade. The current architectural style of the church primarily dates back to this era.

Constructed from the renowned white Brač stone, the church exemplifies the typical Dalmatian architectural style with its simple yet elegant exterior. Inside, visitors can find several significant sacred elements that hold great importance for the local community.

Among the notable features within the church are:

  • the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, carried in procession during the local festivities,
  • stone altars,
  • traditional religious decorations,
  • votive offerings from the faithful,
  • pictures and artifacts related to the maritime and religious heritage of the area.

The statue of Our Lady of Carmel holds a special place in the hearts of the residents, who regard her as the protector of their town and families. During the celebration on July 16th, the statue is paraded through the stone streets of Selca in a traditional evening procession, attracting numerous locals and visitors alike.

Nestled among the stone houses, stairways, and squares typical of Selca, the church is located in the old part of the town. Nearby, the impressive parish church of Christ the King, often referred to as the "Brač Cathedral," invites many visitors to explore both religious sites in one visit.

Beyond its religious significance, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is an integral part of Selca's identity, having served as a gathering place for the community, a venue for processions, and a focal point for major local events over the centuries.
