BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Merag is a settlement and ferry port on the eastern coast of the island of Cres. Merag is a very small town with about 10 inhabitants. The fastest way to get there by car is after crossing the Krk Bridge and continuing your journey to the Valbiska pier on the island of Krk. The ferry from Valbiska comes directly to Merag. Another option is to take a ferry from the Brestova pier in Istria to the Porozina pier on Cres, which is 34 kilometers away from Merag. You can get there by plane at Rijeka Airport near Omišalj on the island of Krk. You can take a train to the nearest railway station in Rijeka, which is 63 kilometers away from Merag. In Rijeka, you can then change to a bus that goes to the station in the town of Cres and continue your journey on the local line to Merag. There is a possibility of getting there directly by bus from Rijeka to Merag, but you should check the bus departure time first because it rarely runs. You can also take a catamaran from Rijeka that has a pier in the Cres harbor and continue your journey to Merag, which is 15 kilometers away.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
Merag has had a very important traffic significance since ancient times, as it is the settlement through which traffic with Krk takes place on the closest route, and it is believed that even in ancient times the settlement had a similar important role. Confirmation of this fact in the Middle Ages is the Krk Statute, where in some parts the traffic route that goes through Merag is mentioned. In later centuries, Merag emerged as an important port and link between the two islands.
BEACHES
A smaller beach is located in the center of Merague, right next to the harbor. In the center, there are also some concrete parts of the coast that are suitable for sunbathing and spending time in the sea, and on the other side of the pier there is another small beach by the cave. A larger number of beaches are in the nearby coves near Merague, but you need a boat to get there, as they are only accessible that way. To visit other beaches, you need to go to the town of Cres, which is 15 kilometers away.
OTHER CONTENT
There are some catering facilities at the ferry port, but there are almost no similar facilities in the town itself. Catering facilities such as restaurants or cafes are not present in Merag and it is necessary to go to the nearby town of Cres to access them. The town of Cres also offers other forms of entertainment and program content that Merag unfortunately does not have.
SPORT
Merag is certainly suitable for mountain walks and cycling. The old road to Merag is particularly interesting, as it is a very demanding trail for all recreational enthusiasts. Most other sports activities are available in the town of Cres and its surroundings.
WHAT TO DO – EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES
An interesting feature of Merag is the famous Meraška jama. It is a large valley of tectonic origin surrounded by a dense laurel forest and its shape is unique on the island of Cres. The Tramuntana forest can be another interesting place for a trip in the northern part of the island. The town of Cres is about 15 kilometers away from Merag and is easily accessible and can be a great destination for sightseeing and excursions. From the town of Cres, trips to other nearby islands can be made.
ACCOMMODATION
Merag is a small settlement and does not have a hotel or guesthouse. The only private accommodation that stands out is the Šmit apartment, which is located on the descending part of the road towards the harbor. The closest campsite to Merag is the Kovačine campsite near the town of Cres. Cres also has a rich offer of accommodation that may suit many people due to its proximity to Merag. ACI Marina Cres and the Cres Shipyard marina are also very accessible due to their proximity.
