Smokvina Beach – Pebble Cove and Quiet Relaxation near Bogomolje
Smokvina Beach is located in a cove of the same name on the southern coast of eastern Hvar, approximately three kilometers from Bogomolje. At the end of the deeply recessed cove, there is a beautiful pebble shore, a few houses almost by the sea, and clear water that takes on bright blue and turquoise tones in calm weather.
Smokvina is peaceful and secluded, but it is not completely deserted. Right next to the beach, there is family accommodation with a small tavern, making this part of the coast somewhat livelier and more equipped than completely wild coves like some neighboring Pelinovik.
Access to Smokvina can be made by car from Bogomolje or by boat. The final part of the land approach is via a gravel road, but regular vehicles can reach the cove.
Pebble Shore and Sandy Seabed
The main part of the beach is located at the bottom of the cove.
The coast is predominantly pebbly, with smaller stones and pebbles, while natural rocks begin at the edges. The shore is not vast, but it is wide enough for a comfortable stay and much more practical than completely rocky parts of the southern coast of Hvar.
In the sea, the seabed changes. In the interior of the cove, the seabed largely transitions to sand, making entry pleasant, and the water above the light bottom takes on a characteristic turquoise color.
Therefore, Smokvina is not a sandy beach on land – it is most accurately described as a pebble beach with a sandy seabed.
Entry into the Sea and Swimming with Children
Entry into the sea from the main shore is straightforward.
The depth increases gradually, and after the initial pebbly section, a softer sandy bottom appears underfoot. This makes Smokvina pleasant for families with children who can enter the water independently.
There is no long shallow area like Mlaske near Sućuraj, but the entry is not steep and does not require descending from rocks.
Along the sides of the cove, the coast and seabed become rockier, making them more interesting for snorkeling.
Tavern by the Beach
What distinguishes Smokvina from completely wild coves is the establishment located almost right by the shore.
This is a long-established family accommodation run by the Perić family, featuring terraces facing the sea and parking for guests. The establishment uses solar energy, and water is supplied from a tank, which reflects the Robinson Crusoe character of this part of Hvar.
On the ground floor of the villa, there is also a small tavern where fish specialties are prepared, and homemade products from the family are offered, including olive oil, wine, brandies, and vegetables from their own production.
Thus, Smokvina is not a beach where one should always expect a complete absence of amenities. However, the tavern is part of the family establishment and should not be viewed as a large public beach bar with all-day tourist programs.
For a day visit, it is still advisable to bring enough water and everything needed for a stay at the beach.
Quiet Cove with Just a Few Houses
Besides Villa Smokvina, there are a few more holiday homes and apartments along the coast.
Construction is rare and concentrated at the very end of the cove, while the surrounding slopes remain mostly natural and covered with Mediterranean vegetation.
As a result, Smokvina does not have the appearance of a tourist settlement. There is no long promenade, a row of cafes and restaurants, or a busy road along the beach.
Even with a few accommodation facilities, the atmosphere remains much quieter than at well-known beaches in Hvar.
How to Reach Smokvina
Smokvina is approximately 3 kilometers from Bogomolje.
From the main island road, a local road descends towards the southern coast, and the final part of the approach is via gravel.
Regular vehicles can reach Villa Smokvina and the houses in the cove, so it is not a beach accessible only by off-road vehicles. However, the gravel road should be driven slowly, especially after winter, heavy rains, or if the vehicle is very low.
A short distance on the map does not mean a few minutes of fast driving – the last part of the road is naturally slower.
Parking
There is space for cars in the cove, but there is no large organized public parking.
Villa Smokvina has designated parking for its guests, but these spots should not be automatically considered public parking for day visitors.
If coming just for the beach, the vehicle should be left in a suitable place along the access road where it will not obstruct passage or entry to private properties.
During the peak season, it is more practical to arrive early.
Natural Shade
Around the cove, Mediterranean vegetation grows, but the main pebble beach is not under dense natural shade all day.
Some shade can be found along the edges and near the houses, depending on the position of the sun, but for a full day stay, it is advisable to have your own umbrella or other protection.
The southern orientation means that Smokvina is well-sunned for much of the day.
Arrival by Boat
Smokvina is also very pleasant for arrival by boat.
The cove is deep enough for anchoring, and the sandy bottom generally holds the anchor well. Anchoring is possible at depths of approximately 2 to 15 meters.
There is no classic marina or large system of commercial moorings. Some houses along the coast have their own small moorings, but these are not automatically available to day visitors.
For sailors, Smokvina is a good choice for a few hours of swimming and relaxation before continuing along the southern coast of eastern Hvar.
Protected from Most Winds, but Not from the South
The shape of the cove provides good shelter from most directions.
The main weakness is the sirocco. Smokvina is open to the south, so during strong southern winds, waves enter deep into the cove, and conditions become worse for both swimming and anchoring.
In calm weather, the cove is very pleasant.
If strong sirocco is forecasted, better choices may be the northern coves of Bogomolje, such as Bristova, Stara, or Vela and Mala Pogorila.
Smokvina or Pelinovik?
Smokvina is located east of Gornji Pelinovik and belongs to the same quiet stretch of the southern coast.
Donji and Gornji Pelinovik are somewhat smaller and even simpler coves, with very few amenities.
Smokvina has a more pronounced pebble shore, more accommodation facilities, and Villa Smokvina with a tavern, making it slightly more practical for a longer stay.
If a completely secluded natural cove is desired, Pelinovik may seem quieter. If a natural beach with some amenities and easier organized stays is preferred, Smokvina is the more practical choice.
Who Will Best Enjoy Smokvina?
Smokvina is a very good choice for guests seeking calm waters and a natural beach, but do not want complete isolation.
It is suitable for couples, families, guests staying in the Bogomolje area, lovers of Robinson-style accommodation, and sailors.
One should not expect a classic tourist beach with a row of bars, sun loungers, and sports facilities.
The greatest value of Smokvina is the combination of beautiful pebble shore, sandy seabed, a few houses by the sea, and a small family tavern, allowing for a full day without the feeling of being at a large tourist beach.
