Skozanje Beach – A Quiet Pebble Cove and Robinson-style Retreat Below Gdinj
Skozanje Beach is located in the cove of the same name on the southern coast of Hvar Island, beneath the village of Gdinj. It is part of a series of Gdinj coves and clearly illustrates why this part of Hvar is so different from the well-known tourist spots on the western side of the island: a small pebble beach, pine trees almost touching the sea, a few houses scattered around the cove, and almost no passing traffic.
Skozanje is not a completely wild cove. Along the coast, there are about ten houses and several holiday apartments, some of which operate in a true Robinson style. However, there are no hotels, promenades, beach bars, or a series of restaurants, so the atmosphere remains very calm and natural.
The beach can be accessed by car from Gdinj or by boat. The last part of the access road is unpaved, which means that Skozanje is mainly visited for a few hours or a whole day, rather than just for a quick swim.
Pebble Beach at the End of the Cove
The main beach is located at the end of the cove.
The beach is pebble, with smaller stones and natural rocky sections along the edges. It is not particularly large, but its size gives it an intimate character.
There are no large paved areas or developed tourist infrastructure along the shore. A few houses are very close to the water, but there is still plenty of greenery between the different parts of the beach and the accommodation.
Therefore, the entire cove feels more like a small summer hamlet than a tourist resort, even in the peak season.
Short Shallow Area and Easy Entry into the Sea
Entry into the sea from the main pebble beach is relatively easy.
Initially, there is a short shallow area, after which the depth gradually increases. The bottom consists mainly of pebbles and small stones, so no rocks or steps are needed for normal entry.
This makes Skozanje a good choice for families with children who can already enter the water independently.
It is not a long shallow lagoon, so very small children should still be supervised, but the access is much more practical than many rocky spots on the southern coast of Hvar.
Clear Water and Natural Shoreline
The water at Skozanje is usually very clear.
As you move away from the main beach, the underwater landscape becomes more diverse, with rocks, rocky edges, and marine vegetation. The side parts of the cove are therefore pleasant for snorkeling and calmly exploring the shoreline.
The central part of the cove provides enough open space for longer swimming, while the edges allow for staying closer to the shore.
There is no intense maritime traffic, but smaller private boats are moored in the cove near the holiday homes.
Pines and Natural Shade
One of the more pleasant features of Skozanje is the natural shade.
Pine trees and other Mediterranean vegetation extend towards the shore, so shaded areas can be found behind parts of the beach. This is particularly valuable during July and August when the southern side of Hvar receives a lot of sun.
The amount of shade changes throughout the day and not the entire beach is constantly shaded.
For a family planning to stay from morning until late afternoon, it still makes sense to bring an umbrella, but Skozanje is more comfortable than completely barren rocky coves without any vegetation by the sea.
A Few Houses, but No Tourist Crowds
There are about ten houses and several smaller accommodation facilities in the cove.
Some are located just 10 to 30 meters from the sea, making Skozanje appealing to guests who want to spend several days without using a car at all.
There is no classic waterfront or road running between the houses and the main part of the beach.
This means that vehicle traffic does not dictate the atmosphere by the sea. Once the car is parked above or near the accommodation, the rest of the day is mostly spent walking between the house, beach, and sea.
True Robinson-style Accommodation
Some of the houses in Skozanje operate in a Robinson style.
This is not just a marketing term. Some facilities use solar energy, gas refrigerators and stoves, and their own water supply systems.
This type of accommodation is best suited for guests who already know that they are not looking for urban comfort and a large number of devices that run all day.
On the other hand, the reward is a very simple way of vacationing: a house just a few dozen meters from the sea, very little traffic, evenings without city noise, and a beach almost at the doorstep.
No Restaurants or Beach Bars
There are no classic restaurants, beach bars, or shops at Skozanje Beach.
This is an important practical piece of information for day visitors.
If coming down from Gdinj just for swimming, it is necessary to bring enough water, food, and everything needed for the entire planned stay.
The accommodation facilities by the sea have their own kitchens and amenities for their guests, but these should not be counted as public beach offerings.
The nearest shop and dining options require a return to Gdinj or a trip to one of the neighboring coves.
How to Get to Skozanje
The cove can be accessed by car from Gdinj.
From the main island road, a local road descends towards the southern coast, and the final part of the access turns into an unpaved road.
Depending on the exact location of the house or the part of the cove being visited, the current accommodation facilities indicate approximately 1.5 to 2 kilometers of unpaved road.
You can drive very close to the sea, so Skozanje is not a beach accessible only on foot or by off-road vehicle.
However, it is necessary to drive slowly on the unpaved road. The condition of such roads can change after winter and heavy rains, and extra caution is needed with very low vehicles.
Parking is Limited
Skozanje does not have a large organized public parking area.
The houses and apartments by the sea have their own parking spaces for their guests, but these spots are not intended for day swimmers.
If coming just for the beach, the car should be left in an available widening or another suitable space that does not block access to the houses and passage for other vehicles.
In the height of summer, it makes sense to arrive a bit earlier, especially since the final part of the road is narrow and there is not much space for turning.
Arrival by Boat
Skozanje is also a natural choice for arriving by a smaller boat.
Some houses in the cove offer their own moorings for their guests, which confirms that the sea is regularly used as an alternative access to this part of the coast.
However, there is no marina or publicly organized nautical mooring.
If coming just for swimming, it is necessary to consider the natural conditions in the cove and avoid private moorings near the houses.
In calm weather, arriving from the sea is particularly suitable for Skozanje as it completely avoids the unpaved access from Gdinj.
Southern Coast and Sirocco
Skozanje is open to the southern side of Hvar.
In stable summer weather, this means plenty of sun and very pleasant water, but with stronger sirocco, conditions can become noticeably worse.
Waves then come from the southern sector and can affect the entire cove, which is especially important for smaller boats and guests planning to spend the whole day by the sea.
If strong sirocco is forecasted, it is advisable to check the sea conditions before descending from Gdinj.
In ordinary summer maestral and stable weather, Skozanje shows its best side – sun, pines, and a very calm rhythm of a small cove.
Skozanje or Torac?
Torac and Skozanje belong to the same area but are practically not the same choice.
Torac has a simpler, paved road access and is therefore more practical for families who come daily by car from Gdinj.
Skozanje requires approximately 1.5–2 kilometers of unpaved road, but in return offers an even more pronounced sense of seclusion and Robinson-style vacation.
If easy daily driving is important, Torac is more practical.
If peace, a few houses, and the feeling that there is no reason to return to the main road after arrival are desired, Skozanje has more character.
A Good Place for a Few Days by the Sea
Skozanje particularly stands out when not just one afternoon is spent in the cove, but several days.
Then the lack of restaurants and shops ceases to be a major problem as shopping can be organized in advance, and the main advantage becomes the fact that the sea is just a few steps from the house.
A day can pass between swimming, reading in the shade, preparing a simple meal, and dining by the sea without the need for driving.
This is precisely the type of vacation that attracts visitors to eastern Hvar.
Who Will Enjoy Skozanje the Most?
Skozanje Beach is best suited for couples, families who enjoy natural beaches, guests of Robinson-style accommodation, and anyone looking for a few hours or days away from tourist crowds.
The pebble beach and short shallow entry make swimming easy, while the pines provide areas of natural shade.
On the other hand, guests expecting a beach bar, sun loungers, large parking, a shop, and more restaurants within walking distance will likely be more satisfied in a larger Hvar town.
Skozanje is valuable precisely for what it lacks: a small pebble beach, a few houses by the sea, pines, tranquility, and enough distance from the main road that eastern Hvar still feels almost as it did before the development of large tourist resorts.
