Veprinova Beach – A Quiet Pebble Cove with a Fish Restaurant near Gdinj
Veprinova Beach is located in a deep cove on the southern coast of Hvar Island, beneath the village of Gdinj. It is part of a series of Gdinj coves that stretch along this quiet side of the island, distinguished by its beautiful pebble shore, natural shade, and Fish Restaurant Veprinova situated practically by the sea.
Access to Veprinova is possible by car from Gdinj, but the last part of the road is not suitable for fast driving. The distance from the main island road to the beach is approximately six kilometers, with about the last two kilometers being unpaved. This slower access is one reason why the cove does not have the character of a large tourist beach even in the height of summer.
At the end of the road, there is a small shore surrounded by pines, a few houses and apartments, and very clear water. Therefore, Veprinova is an excellent choice for a full-day outing: it is secluded enough to provide peace, and the restaurant by the beach means that there is no need to drive back to Gdinj for lunch or dinner.
A Small Pebble Beach at the End of the Cove
The main beach is located at the very end of Veprinova.
The shore is covered with finer pebbles and small stones, which are more pleasant for lying down and entering the water than the rough rocks that dominate many parts of the southern coast of Hvar.
The beach is not large. This gives it a more intimate character, but during the peak summer period, it also means that the best spots can be quickly occupied.
Along the sides of the cove, the pebbles transition to rocky shores, so it is possible to find some quieter spots further away from the central beach.
Clear Water and Sandy Parts of the Seabed
The water in Veprinova is exceptionally clear, and in the deeper part of the cove, the seabed is predominantly sandy, occasionally covered with seagrass.
Right by the beach, it starts with pebbles and smaller stones, gradually changing as you go further out. Because of this, on sunny days, the central part of the cove takes on lighter blue and turquoise tones.
Entry from the main beach is easy and does not require descending over rocks. However, the depth does increase somewhat more quickly than on very shallow family beaches, so usual caution is advised with very small children.
Swimming in Veprinova is very pleasant precisely because just a few meters from the shore, you transition from the narrow bathing area to the more open space of the cove.
Natural Shade Under the Pines
Veprinova has more natural shade than many completely bare coves on eastern Hvar.
Pines and other Mediterranean vegetation descend towards the shore, and part of the beach receives shade as the sun moves westward throughout the day. The area along the edge of the cove opposite the houses is particularly pleasant, where more shade is created in the afternoon.
However, not the entire beach is constantly shaded. If planning to stay from morning until late afternoon, an umbrella is still useful, especially for families with children.
Fish Restaurant Veprinova Right by the Sea
A significant advantage of this cove is the Fish Restaurant Veprinova, a small family restaurant located right by the sea.
The concept is simple and perfectly suits the location: grilled fish and seafood, squid, octopus, homemade pasta, vegetables, and a few meat dishes. The emphasis is on simple Dalmatian cuisine and dining on the terrace with a view across the entire cove.
Restaurant Veprinova has been one of the more well-known reasons to visit this small cove for years, so Veprinova is not just a place to go for swimming.
During the main season, especially if dining in a larger group, it is advisable to keep in mind that the small restaurant has a limited number of tables and to inquire in advance.

Not Completely Wild, but Far from Tourist Crowds
Alongside the beach and restaurant, there are a few houses and apartments.
Some accommodations in Veprinova have a Robinson Crusoe character – solar panels, water tanks, and simpler infrastructure are used compared to Gdinj or larger towns on Hvar.
As a result, the cove feels inhabited, but never like a true tourist resort. There are no promenades, a series of shops, large hotels, or traffic along the shore.
Even when the apartments are full, the total number of people staying in the cove remains relatively small.
How to Reach Veprinova Beach
Veprinova is accessed from Gdinj.
At the village, turn off the main island road D116 towards the southern side of the island and follow the road towards the Gdinj coves. After approximately 3.5 kilometers, you will reach an intersection with signs pointing to various coves, and for Veprinova, continue further south.
The total distance from Gdinj to the beach is approximately 6 kilometers by road.
The first part of the approach is better, while the last 2 kilometers are unpaved. The road in that section is narrower and requires slower driving.
A regular passenger car can reach the cove, but it is not a road to hurry on. With very low vehicles, extra caution is needed for bumps, especially after bad weather.
Parking – Limited Space Just Above the Beach
Parking is one of the things that is good to know before arrival.
When you reach the last intersection in Veprinova, the road down leads to the beach and a few parking spots. Parking space is limited.
At the end of the road, there is a small widening on a gravel surface. The terrain is sloped, and the unpaved road can be uneven, making maneuvering not as straightforward as in a designated parking lot.
A few additional spots can be found just before the end of the road.
In July and August, it makes sense to arrive early, and special care should be taken not to block access to private houses and apartments.
A Beach Suitable for a Full-Day Stay
Veprinova is one of those coves that is more worthwhile to visit for a full day than just for a quick swim.
Descending from Gdinj and the last two kilometers of unpaved road are not a problem, but it does not make much sense to go through them several times a day.
It is much more pleasant to bring basic beach essentials, find a spot on the shore or in the shade, spend several hours in the water, and combine swimming with lunch at the restaurant.
For this reason, Veprinova works well for couples and families looking for a slower day by the sea without the need to constantly change locations.
Arrival by Boat and Anchoring
The cove is also interesting for sailors.
Veprinova has a sandy bottom with areas of seagrass, and in the central area, it is possible to anchor at a depth of approximately 2 to 10 meters.
The cove provides good shelter from most wind directions but is open to the southern sector. In stronger southern winds, conditions for anchoring and swimming become worse.
There is no marina or organized nautical mooring, so Veprinova should be viewed as a natural anchorage.
Arriving by boat fits the character of the place very well: anchoring, swimming, and dining at a restaurant just a few meters from the sea.
When to Avoid Veprinova?
In stable summer weather, the cove is very pleasant.
A problem can arise with sirocco, or stronger winds and waves from the south. Since Veprinova opens to the southern sea, it loses some of its protection then.
If strong sirocco is forecasted, it is advisable to check the sea conditions before descending from Gdinj. On Hvar, there is always the option to go to the other side of the island, where the sea can be significantly calmer at the same time.
The summer maestral, on the other hand, often brings pleasant coolness during the hottest part of the day.
Veprinova or Tvrdni Dolac?
Both coves are located on the southern side of Gdinj but have somewhat different characters.
Tvrdni Dolac has more houses and feels like a small summer village by the sea. Access and available space around the cove are also somewhat more spacious.
Veprinova is smaller, more intimate, and more natural, with one of its greatest assets being an excellent fish restaurant right by the beach.
For a guest whose priority is complete peace, a small pebble shore, and lunch by the sea, Veprinova is particularly appealing.
If staying in Gdinj for several days, it is certainly worth visiting both.
Who Will Enjoy Veprinova the Most?
Veprinova Beach is best suited for guests seeking a small natural beach, very clean water, shade from pines, and a good restaurant without large tourist crowds.
It is good for couples, families who do not need organized beach infrastructure, guests staying in Gdinj, and sailors.
It will be less suitable for those who require large parking, sun loungers, sports facilities, showers, and more bars along the beach.
Reaching Veprinova requires a bit of effort, but the last two kilometers of unpaved road preserve what brings visitors here – a small pebble shore, pines, a peaceful Hvar environment, and a meal by the sea without the atmosphere of a large resort.
