Podnožica Beach – Feronija in Ivan Dolac, a pebble cove with natural shade and clear water

Podnožica Beach, also known as Feronija, is located on the eastern part of Ivan Dolac, about a ten-minute leisurely walk from the main Velo žolo beach. It is a smaller pebble cove with very clean water, a gentle entry into the sea, and one significant advantage over most beaches on the southern side of Hvar – good natural shade behind the shore.

During the summer, a small beach bar operates near the beach, and sun loungers and umbrellas are available. There is plenty of greenery behind the pebble area, so it is possible to find a shaded spot even without an umbrella.

Due to the combination of shade, easy access, and calmer waters, Podnožica is particularly suitable for families and visitors who wish to stay at the beach for several hours.

Podnožica or Feronija?

Both names, Podnožica and Feronija, are used for this cove in Ivan Dolac.

Podnožica is the name you will most often see on maps today, while Feronija is also a well-known name for this beach and part of the coastline.

Regardless of which name you hear in the area or see in accommodation instructions, it refers to a small green cove east of the main beach in Ivan Dolac.

Small pebbles and a pleasant entry into the sea

The main part of the beach is covered with smaller light pebbles and gravel.

The entry into the sea is easy, with no large rocks immediately next to the shore. The bottom gradually slopes, providing enough space for children and less confident swimmers along the coast.

At the ends of the cove, larger stones and rocks appear.

Water shoes are not necessary in the main area, but they can be useful if swimming near rocky edges.

One of the better beaches in Ivan Dolac for natural shade

Podnožica stands out for its shade behind the beach.

Pine trees and other Mediterranean greenery come very close to the shore, allowing for plenty of shaded spots during the day. This is a significant advantage during July and August when the beaches on the southern side of Hvar are exposed to strong sunlight for most of the day.

If you are visiting the beach with children or plan to stay until the afternoon, the natural shade is one of the main reasons to choose Podnožica.

Crystal clear water

The water is exceptionally clear, especially in the morning and on days without a southern wind.

The light pebbles give the shallow water a turquoise color, while it gradually changes to dark blue towards the open Šćedro Channel.

In front of the central part, the bottom is mostly pebbly and rocky, while it becomes more varied along the edges of the cove.

A good beach for children

Podnožica is one of the more practical beaches in Ivan Dolac for families.

The smaller pebbles are pleasant for sitting and playing, the entry into the sea is gradual, and natural shade is located just behind the shore. Additionally, a bar operates along the beach during the season, so there is no need to return to the town center for every drink or short break.

In July and August, it is best to arrive in the morning, as the beach is not large and good shaded spots are quickly taken.

Beach bar by the beach

A beach bar operates near Podnožica during the tourist season.

You can stop by for a cold drink, coffee, or a light snack, which is sufficient for a day spent at the beach.

For a more substantial lunch, a wider selection of restaurants can be found in the central part of Ivan Dolac.

Sun loungers and umbrellas

During the season, sun loungers and umbrellas are available at the beach.

However, many bathers prefer the natural shade among the trees behind the shore. If you arrive early enough, it is possible to find a very comfortable spot that remains protected from the strongest sun for a good part of the day.

Snorkeling

The most interesting part for exploring the underwater world is along the rocky edges of the cove.

Here, more small fish gather among the larger stones and rocks, and due to the very clear water, they can be easily observed from the surface.

In calm seas, it is sufficient to stay close to the shore – there is no need to swim far out.

How to get to Podnožica?

The beach is located east of the center of Ivan Dolac.

It takes approximately 8–10 minutes of leisurely walking from the main beach Velo žolo to Podnožica. The path goes through the eastern part of the village towards a quieter part of the coastline.

You can also drive very close to the beach, but if you are already staying in Ivan Dolac, walking is simpler.

Parking

There is parking space near the beach, and it is only a short walk from the car to the sea.

The number of spots is limited, so during July and August, the nearest spots fill up quickly in the morning.

Guests staying in Ivan Dolac practically have no reason to use a car, as Podnožica can be easily reached on foot from most of the village.

When to visit?

The most pleasant time to visit is in the morning.

The sea is usually calmest then, there is more space on the shore, and it is easier to find a good spot in natural shade.

Podnožica is also pleasant in the afternoon thanks to the greenery behind the beach.

June and September are particularly nice as the water is still suitable for swimming, while there is significantly more space on the small shore.

Podnožica or Velo žolo?

The main beach Velo žolo is larger and located in the center of Ivan Dolac, with more restaurants, cafes, and other amenities.

Podnožica is smaller, quieter, and greener.

If you want to be in the center of the village and have everything immediately behind the beach, Velo žolo is more practical. If you value natural shade and a somewhat quieter atmosphere, Podnožica is a better choice.

Who is Podnožica best for?

The beach is particularly suitable for families, visitors who do not want to spend the entire day in strong sunlight, and anyone who enjoys smaller natural coves.

It has just enough amenities to make your stay practical, but it is not transformed into a large organized beach club.

Smaller pebbles, clear water, easy entry into the sea, and shade behind the beach make Podnožica one of the more pleasant beaches for a longer stay in Ivan Dolac.
