Ivan Dolac Beach – Velo žolo, white pebbles and crystal clear waters on the southern side of Hvar

Ivan Dolac Beach is the main beach of the village of the same name on the southern side of Hvar Island. It is located directly below the houses and apartments by the sea, and is commonly referred to locally as Velo žolo. On Google Maps, it is simply marked as Ivan Dolac Beach.

This is a classic beach of southern Hvar: light pebbles, very clear water, plenty of sunshine, and an open view towards Šćedro and Korčula. Unlike hidden coves that require a long walk, access to the sea here is straightforward, and there are cafes, restaurants, a bakery, and other seasonal amenities nearby.

Due to its easy access and pleasant entry into the water, Velo žolo is particularly popular among families staying in Ivan Dolac.

Velo žolo – the main beach of Ivan Dolac

Ivan Dolac has several smaller beaches and rocky swimming spots, but Velo žolo is most commonly regarded as the main local beach.

The beach is large enough to accommodate significantly more bathers than the small surrounding coves, and the settlement begins immediately behind the beach. Therefore, there is no need to plan an entire outing – from most accommodations in the coastal part of Ivan Dolac, the sea can be reached on foot in just a few minutes.

During July and August, the beach is busiest in the middle of the day, while mornings and late afternoons are considerably quieter.

White pebbles and turquoise waters

The coastline consists of light small and medium-sized pebbles, characteristic of the southern coast of Hvar.

The white stone beneath the surface gives the shallows a distinct turquoise color, while the water transitions to dark blue just a few dozen meters away.

At the ends of the beach, the shore becomes rockier, providing a bit more privacy when the central area is crowded.

Water shoes are not mandatory, but they are useful as larger and sharper stones can be found among the pebbles and in the rockier parts.

Entry into the water and depth

From the main part of the beach, entry into the water is easy over the pebbles.

Along the shoreline, there is a shallow area suitable for children and less confident swimmers, but the water gradually deepens after that. It is not a long shallow sandy cove, so children should be supervised as they would on other beaches along the open southern coast.

The seabed mainly consists of pebbles and stones, with occasional lighter and finer sections.

On calm days, the water is extremely clear, and the bottom can be seen clearly even at a greater distance from the shore.

A good beach for families with children

Velo žolo is one of the more practical beaches in this part of Hvar for a family holiday.

The advantage is not only the entry into the water but also the fact that food, drinks, ice cream, and basic amenities are very close to the beach. There is no need to carry everything needed for the entire day or drive to a restaurant after swimming.

There is also a small play area for children nearby, and the coastal area of Ivan Dolac is relatively small and easy to navigate on foot.

If traveling with very young children, it is most pleasant to arrive early in the morning when there is more space by the water and the sun is not yet strong.

How much natural shade is there?

There is not much natural shade on the main beach itself.

Pines and other greenery provide shade in some peripheral areas and behind the beach, but for most of the day, a large part of the pebbles is exposed to the sun.

If you plan to stay all day, an umbrella is very useful.

The advantage is that within a few minutes from the beach, you can reach shaded terraces of cafes and restaurants, allowing you to spend the hottest part of the day out of direct sunlight.

Snorkeling

For exploring the underwater world, the rocky edges of the beach are more interesting than the central part of the shore.

There, larger rocks, stone slabs, and crevices where small fish gather alternate beneath the water.

Visibility is very good on calm days, so it is not necessary to swim far from the shore.

In stronger southern winds, the sea can become choppy, making it not the best day for swimming near the rocks.

View towards Šćedro and Korčula

Ivan Dolac is located on the open southern side of Hvar.

From the beach, there is a view across the sea towards the islet of Šćedro, and on very clear days, Korčula can also be seen.

Behind the village, the steep southern slopes of Hvar rise, covered in vineyards. This contrast between the sea in front and the vineyards behind is one of the most recognizable images of Ivan Dolac.

This area is particularly associated with the vineyards of Plavac Mali, which thrive in sunny and steep southern positions.

Amenities near the beach

Unlike the remote coves between Ivan Dolac and Sveta Nedjelja, the main beach has enough amenities for a full day stay.

Nearby, seasonal cafes and restaurants operate, and there are also a bakery, ice cream shop, and a small store for basic necessities.

During the season, there are also showers and some additional beach facilities available.

However, Velo žolo is not a large organized resort. The beach has retained the appearance of a natural pebble shore, and the facilities are spread out in the small settlement behind it.

How to get to Ivan Dolac?

From Jelsa, drive towards Pitve, then through the Pitve – Zavala tunnel to the southern side of Hvar.

The tunnel is approximately 1.4 kilometers long, very narrow, and lacks conventional interior lighting. Traffic is regulated alternately by traffic lights.

After exiting the tunnel, do not descend towards Zavala but continue westward towards Ivan Dolac.

The road is paved, but in some sections, it is narrow and winding, so it is advisable to drive cautiously.

Parking at Ivan Dolac Beach

The area of the main beach can be accessed by car.

Vehicles can be parked at a seasonal parking lot close to the beach, partly shaded by pines, and it is just a short walk from the parking area to the shore.

During the peak season, parking is charged, and prices may vary from year to year.

In July and August, it is more practical to arrive early in the morning when it is easier to find a spot both in the parking lot and on the beach itself.

If you are staying in Ivan Dolac, using a car is generally unnecessary – it is simpler to reach Velo žolo on foot from most parts of the settlement.

When is the best time to visit?

During July and August, the best time to arrive is in the morning before the heat peaks.

The sea is usually calm then, there is more space on the beach, and parking is easier to find.

Late afternoons are also very pleasant as the sun weakens and daily bathers begin to leave.

June and September may be the most beautiful periods for Ivan Dolac. The sea is suitable for swimming, amenities are still operational, and the beach is much quieter than during the peak season.

What to do when the sirocco blows?

The beach faces south and the open Šćedro channel.

In calm conditions and light summer winds, the sea is calm and very pleasant. In strong sirocco winds, waves can develop, so conditions can differ significantly from completely sheltered coves on the northern side of Hvar.

If strong sirocco is forecasted, it is safer to choose a swimming spot in a more sheltered part of the island that day.

Who is Ivan Dolac Beach best suited for?

Velo žolo is particularly suitable for guests who want a nice natural pebble beach but do not want to be completely without amenities.

It is good for families, couples, and anyone staying in Ivan Dolac since almost everything needed is within walking distance.

It is not ideal if you are looking for a large amount of natural shade or a completely secluded cove. For that, there are smaller beaches along the southern coast.

However, if you want clear water, white pebbles, a view towards Šćedro, and the option to go for coffee, lunch, or ice cream within a few minutes from the beach, the main beach of Ivan Dolac is one of the most practical choices in this part of Hvar.
