Sućuraj Lighthouse – Beacon at the Eastern Cape of Hvar
Sućuraj Lighthouse, locally known simply as Lanterna, stands at the easternmost tip of the island of Hvar, at the point where the island meets the sea passage between Hvar, the Makarska Riviera, and Pelješac. It is less than a kilometer from the center of Sućuraj, making it one of the few larger Dalmatian lighthouses accessible by a short walk from the village.
The stone structure with a square tower is not monumental, but due to its isolated position on the low cape, it has become one of the recognizable motifs of Sućuraj. There is no city quay or large tourist infrastructure in front of it – only a rocky shore, low Mediterranean vegetation, and open sea.
Lanterna is still an active maritime lighthouse. It does not have a lighthouse crew, and the operation of the light is automated and monitored remotely.
Lighthouse at the End of Hvar
The location is what makes Sućuraj's Lanterna particularly interesting.
It is situated at the easternmost point of the island of Hvar, just a few kilometers across the sea from the Dalmatian mainland. From the cape, there is a view towards the Makarska Riviera, Biokovo, and the sea passage through which ferries, fishing boats, sailboats, and other vessels pass daily.
Due to its location, Sućuraj has been along an important maritime route for centuries. The light at such a cape was not only a local aid for fishermen but also an important marker for vessels passing between eastern Hvar and the mainland.
The Lighthouse Tradition Precedes the Current Lanterna
A light existed in the area of the cape even before the current lighthouse.
During the French administration in the early 19th century, an older Sućuraj lantern was built, associated with St. Anthony the Abbot. This older structure was located near the current lighthouse but was destroyed during World War II.
The present stone lighthouse belongs to the period of intensive development of the Adriatic coast and maritime signaling in the 19th century.
In the local history of Sućuraj, the year of construction of the current Lanterna is noted as 1889, while the official register of maritime navigation for the Sućuraj lighthouse states 1874. The difference arises from the different recording of the start of the lighthouse service and the later structure, so it is most important for visitors to know that the lighthouse tradition at this cape has existed since the 19th century.
14-Meter High Stone Tower
The lighthouse is a simply shaped stone structure with a tower connected to the former lighthouse keeper's house.
According to official data from the maritime navigation register, the tower is 14 meters high, and the focal point of the main light is at the same height above the mean sea level. Due to the low position of the cape itself, the lighthouse did not require a tall tower to be visible from the sea.
The main white light has a range of 11 nautical miles, or about 20 kilometers. It operates in a four-second rhythm – two seconds of light and two seconds of darkness – and is visible in a full circle around the cape.
These are details that visitors may not notice during the day, but they explain why Lanterna remains an active part of Adriatic maritime signaling.
Families of Lighthouse Keepers Once Lived Here
Before automation, the lighthouse had a permanent crew.
Lighthouse keepers did not only work here but lived on the cape with their families. Sućuraj was somewhat unusual in this regard, as the Lanterna is close enough to the settlement for the children of lighthouse keepers to attend the local school.
The light was automated in the 1990s, after which the permanent lighthouse crew was withdrawn.
Today, the system is monitored remotely, so there is no longer the daily life of a lighthouse family that existed here for decades.
Accommodation Available at the Lighthouse
The former residential part of the lighthouse has been adapted for tourist accommodation.
This is a rather unique opportunity as it is not an isolated lighthouse on a remote islet accessible only by boat. Lanterna is close enough to Sućuraj that one can walk to shops, restaurants, or the ferry port while staying almost at the very end of Hvar.
The accommodation section should be viewed separately from the maritime function of the lighthouse – the active signaling and technical parts are not a typical tourist attraction open for free visits.
Walking from the Center of Sućuraj
Reaching the Lanterna from the center of Sućuraj is very straightforward.
From the quay, head towards the eastern end of the village and continue towards the point. The distance is less than a kilometer, so a car is not necessary.
The walk is particularly pleasant in the morning or later in the afternoon when the summer heat is not at its peak. Along the way, you pass quieter parts of the coast and swimming spots on rocky slabs.
If staying in Sućuraj, the Lanterna is one of the landmarks that does not require planning as a special trip – it easily fits into a regular walk through the village.
Swimming on the Rocky Shore Around the Cape
The area around the lighthouse is also one of the swimming spots in Sućuraj.
The shore is predominantly rocky, with flat slabs and places from which one can enter directly into the clear sea. There is no typical pebble beach or many facilities, making it more suitable for adult swimmers and those who enjoy a natural rocky coastline.
For small children and swimmers who prefer shallow entries, the nearby Česminica is more practical.
The advantage of swimming near the Lanterna is the open view and the feeling of being almost at the tip of the island.
View Towards the Mainland and Ferries
From the cape, it is easy to see how close Sućuraj actually is to the mainland.
The Makarska Riviera and the Biokovo mountain range appear almost within reach, and ferries connecting Sućuraj and Drvenik can regularly be seen on the water.
The combination of the stone lighthouse, open sea, and high mountains on the mainland is one of the reasons why this is a very photogenic location.
On clear days, visibility is particularly good after a bora wind, when the air becomes clear, and the outlines of the mainland are distinctly visible.
Can You Enter the Lighthouse?
Lanterna is not a typical museum or viewpoint where tickets are purchased to climb the tower.
The lighthouse is an active maritime signaling object, and the technical part is not intended for free tourist visits. The former residential part is used as tourist accommodation, so the privacy of guests should be respected.
It is best to visit it as an external landmark – walk to the cape, view the structure, the sea, and the surrounding rocky shore, and then continue your walk through Sućuraj.
Parking
It is possible to approach the lighthouse area by vehicle, but there is no reason to drive to the structure itself if already staying in Sućuraj.
The simplest option is to leave the car in an appropriate place in the settlement and walk the last part.
The area around the lighthouse should be kept clear for access to the structure and guests of the accommodation, so it should not be treated as a public parking area near the landmark.
