Rasovatica Beach Sućuraj – A Hidden Cove Accessible via Dirt Road
Rasovatica Beach is located on the southern coast of eastern Hvar, west of Židigova and a few kilometers from Sućuraj. It is a deep natural cove that extends approximately 400 meters inland, surrounded by low Mediterranean vegetation, forest, and an almost completely undeveloped landscape.
Unlike Prapatna and Židigova, which are significantly more challenging to access by land, Rasovatica is one of the few coves in this wild part of the southern coast that can be approached via a dirt road. This does not mean that one should expect a well-maintained road, parking, and a short walk to the beach – the final access still retains the character of a natural island cove.
At the bottom, there is a small gravel area suitable for entering the sea, while the rest of the coastline is dominated by rocks. There are no beach bars, restaurants, showers, or sunbeds, so visitors come primarily for peace, swimming, and the natural environment.
Small Gravel Area at the Bottom of the Cove
Rasovatica is not a large gravel beach.
A local guide for the Sućuraj area notes that at the bottom of such coves on the southern coast, there is usually gravel, while the rest of the coastline is rocky. Rasovatica has this appearance – a small natural bathing area in the deepest part of the cove and a rocky shore leading out to the open sea.
On the rocky parts, it is possible to find flatter surfaces for sunbathing, but for longer stays, a thicker mat is advisable.
Footwear for rocky areas can also be useful, especially if entering over the rocks instead of through the central gravel section.
Narrow and Natural Rocky Coastline
Rasovatica is interesting precisely because it has not been developed like a tourist beach.
The official report for the area describes the coastline as narrow, rocky, and gently sloping, surrounded by indigenous Mediterranean vegetation and forested areas.
There are no paved sunbathing areas or significant alterations to the coast. Natural terrain begins almost immediately behind the sea.
For this reason, the cove is more suitable for swimmers seeking a peaceful natural spot than for families looking for a fully equipped and easily accessible beach.
Clear Waters and Swimming by the Rocks
The rocky coastline and absence of large tourist infrastructure give Rasovatica a very natural marine environment.
Along the edges of the cove, it is good to swim with a mask and snorkel as the rocky seabed continues below the surface, while the lighter parts of the bottom are most pleasant for traditional swimming.
In calm weather, the sea is particularly clear.
As one moves towards the more open part of the cove, the depth increases, making the side rocks more interesting for good swimmers than for small children.
The Cove Faces South
Rasovatica is located on the southern side of Hvar and is open to the sea in that direction.
In calm conditions and light winds, swimming conditions can be excellent, but the sirocco can bring waves deep into the cove.
If planning to arrive via dirt road or boat, it is advisable to check the forecast beforehand. There is little point in navigating a challenging access road if the southern coast is expected to be rough that day.
A benefit of Sućuraj is that beaches are located at very short distances on both sides of Hvar, so during sirocco, it is often better to cross to the northern side towards Mlaska.
Access to Rasovatica via Dirt Road
Access is one of the most important differences between Rasovatica and most surrounding wild coves.
A local guide for Sućuraj states that after Blaca, there is no road following the southern coast, but a separate dirt road provides access directly to Rasovatica and Carevića Vale.
This means that by car, scooter, or off-road vehicle, it is possible to get significantly closer to the cove than at Židigova.
However, it is a dirt road, and its condition can change after rain, winter, and summer traffic. Caution is advised when driving a low vehicle, and it is wise to assess the actual state of the road before proceeding.
No Organized Parking
There is no standard public parking at Rasovatica.
At the end of the access road, there may be natural widenings where vehicles can be left, but one should not expect marked parking spaces, asphalt, or organized parking zones.
Vehicles should be parked in a way that does not block the narrow dirt road or the passage of other vehicles.
If the final part of the road appears poor, it is safer to stop earlier at an appropriate location and walk the last part.
No Facilities – Bring Everything You Need
Rasovatica is completely different from Česminica or Mlaska.
There are no restaurants, cafes, shops, toilets, showers, or sunbed rentals at the beach. A local guide for the southern coast explicitly states that there are generally no facilities in these coves, except for a few old stone houses.
For a few hours of stay, it is advisable to bring:
water
food
sun protection
footwear for rocky shores
everything else that may be needed during the day
On the shore itself, one should not count on reliable natural shade. The slopes are covered with vegetation, but the bathing area generally remains exposed to the sun.
Fish Farm is Part of Today's Rasovatica
An important practical piece of information is that the area of Rasovatica contains a mariculture zone, or fish farm.
Official documents from the Split-Dalmatia County and environmental documentation confirm the existence of a fish farm in the cove area, while the broader zone of Rasovatica is designated for mariculture.
This means that Rasovatica is not completely "wild" in a visual sense like some neighboring coves – from parts of the coast or sea, installations of the fish farm can be seen.
For swimmers, this is generally not an obstacle to using the coastal area, but boats should not approach the cages or anchor in their immediate vicinity. It is necessary to respect the signs and the area designated for mariculture.
Arrival by Boat
Rasovatica is also accessible from the sea.
The long and relatively deeply recessed cove makes it a natural spot for a short stop and swimming, but due to the fish farm, special attention should be paid to the area where it is safe to navigate and anchor.
On the eastern side of the cove, there is a mariculture area, so before anchoring, one should ensure that the vessel is outside the restricted space. Nautical sources warn of anchoring and fishing restrictions near the fish farm.
For swimming, it is best to choose a part of the cove that is sufficiently distant from boats and installations.
Is it Suitable for Small Children?
The gravel area at the bottom of the cove can be pleasant for swimming, but Rasovatica is not among the most practical beaches around Sućuraj for very small children.
The reasons are the dirt road access, lack of toilets and showers, limited shade, and the natural rocky coastline.
For families seeking a simpler day by the sea, better options are Česminica or Mlaska, where facilities, easier access, and very shallow sandy seabeds are available.
Rasovatica is a better choice for those who prioritize peace over comfort.
Rasovatica or Židigova?
The two coves are located close to each other but have an important difference.
Rasovatica has access via a special dirt road, but there is mariculture in the cove area.
Židigova does not have normal road access, making it easier to reach by boat or through more demanding hiking, but its coastal environment is more natural and secluded.
If traveling by car and wanting to explore the wild southern coast, Rasovatica is more practical. If arriving by boat and aiming for a more natural small cove, Židigova may be more interesting.
Who Will Enjoy Rasovatica the Most?
Rasovatica Beach will appeal to visitors who enjoy exploring lesser-known parts of the island and who do not mind dirt roads, lack of facilities, and rocky shores.
The main advantages are peace, a small gravel area, clear waters, natural landscape, and the possibility of land access to a cove that is significantly less visited than the main beaches of Sućuraj.
One should not expect a developed tourist beach. On the contrary – Rasovatica is a place for a few hours of swimming in nature, along with all the practical drawbacks that come with such a location.
