Sucuraj Beach – Swimming on the Rocky Point by the Lighthouse
Sucuraj Beach, marked on Google Maps, is located at the eastern end of Hvar Island, along the rocky coast towards the Sucuraj Lighthouse. Locally, this stretch of coastline is generally referred to as Punte Path, an area that extends from the Sucuraj port towards the Lantern.
This is not a typical organized beach with pebbles, sun loungers, and a beach bar. The coast consists of natural rocks and flat stone slabs from which one can enter directly into the clear sea. This makes it appealing to swimmers who prefer quieter rocky spots rather than urban beaches like Česminica.
The main feature is its location. Swimming occurs practically at the very end of Hvar, with an open view towards the mainland and the sea passage between the island and the Makarska Riviera. A few minutes away is the recognizable stone Sucuraj Lighthouse, one of the symbols of the area.
Natural Rocks Instead of a Classic Beach
The coastline is almost entirely rocky.
In some places, the rocks create relatively flat slabs where one can spread a towel and sunbathe, but do not expect a wide area covered in pebbles or sand.
This terrain is particularly suitable for adult swimmers and those who prefer to find their own rock a bit further away from others.
It is practical to bring a thicker mat or blanket for lying down, as the stone can become very warm during the day.
Entering the Sea
The seabed is mostly rocky, and the depth increases more quickly than at Česminica or the sandy coves around Sucuraj.
Entry depends on the exact chosen spot. In some areas, one can gradually descend over the rocks, while in others, it is more natural to enter directly into deeper water.
Water shoes can be useful due to the rocks and slippery stones near the surface.
Due to this access, it is not the best beach for very small children or individuals who require a completely gentle, shallow entry. For families with small children, Česminica is a much more practical choice.
Clear Water and Good Underwater Visibility
The rocky coast has one significant advantage – there is no fine sand that would stir up from the bottom, so the water often remains very clear.
Along the edge of the rocks, small fish and the underwater rocky terrain can be observed, making the area suitable for snorkeling.
Unlike more enclosed coves, here one feels the open sea, especially when swimming a few meters from the shore.
Limited Natural Shade
At the point itself, one should not rely on reliable natural shade.
There is vegetation in the hinterland, but most of the rocky surfaces along the sea are exposed to the sun. If planning to stay for several hours, especially in the middle of the day, it is advisable to bring sun protection.
This is why this place is particularly pleasant early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the sun is not as strong, and the rocky coast becomes more comfortable for longer sitting.
Sucuraj Lighthouse
Right next to this part of the coast is the Sucuraj Lighthouse – Lanterna, one of the most recognizable motifs of the area.
The lighthouse was built in the late 19th century and is still active. It is located at the easternmost tip of Hvar Island, less than a kilometer from the center of Sucuraj.
Once, lighthouse keepers lived here with their families, while today the light is automated, and part of the building has been arranged for tourist accommodation.
Swimming by this rocky point thus has a very special ambiance – the sea, the view towards the mainland, and the old Lantern create one of the most recognizable scenes of eastern Hvar.
View Towards the Mainland and Biokovo
The location at the very end of the island provides this coast with a view that is not available at the enclosed beaches further west on Hvar.
Across the sea, one can see the Makarska Riviera and the Biokovo massif, and depending on the position and visibility, the view also opens towards Pelješac and other parts of the mainland.
Especially after a bora wind, when the air is clear, the mountains on the other side of the channel can appear surprisingly close.
Quieter than Česminica
Česminica is the main organized beach of Sucuraj and naturally attracts a larger number of families.
Punte Path is completely different. There is no large bathing area, but swimmers are distributed along the rocky slabs along the coast.
This makes it easier to find a quieter piece of shore, even when there are many guests in the area.
This is especially a good choice for couples and adult swimmers who do not need showers, a café bar, and other facilities right next to their towel.
No Facilities Directly on the Beach
At the rocky shore itself, do not expect a café bar, restaurant, toilet, shower, or rental of sun loungers.
The advantage is that the center of Sucuraj is not far away. The waterfront, shops, restaurants, and cafés can be reached on foot, so it is not necessary to carry supplies for the entire day as with remote wild coves.
For a few hours of swimming, it is still best to bring water, especially during the hottest part of summer.
Access from the Center of Sucuraj
This part of the coast can be reached on foot from the center of Sucuraj, following the road and the coast towards the eastern point and the lighthouse.
From the center of the village, expect about a ten-minute walk, depending on the exact point where one wishes to enter the coast.
Access is also possible by bicycle, scooter, or car via the local road towards the Lantern.
For swimming, the last few meters are crossed over natural rocky terrain.
Parking
Near the lighthouse and access road, there is no large conventional parking lot like those found at larger tourist beaches.
It is possible to drive to the area of the point, but the number of suitable parking spots is limited. In the main season, it is more practical to leave the car in the wider area of Sucuraj and walk.
If already staying in the village, a car is actually not necessary for this beach.
Wind and Boat Traffic
The point is more exposed than the sheltered coves, so the sea conditions depend significantly on the wind.
The advantage of Sucuraj is that it has coastlines on both sides of the narrow eastern part of Hvar. If the sea is rough on one side, it is often possible to find calmer swimming on the other side of the village.
Since this is the easternmost tip and an area near the shipping route to Sucuraj, when swimming further from the shore, one should pay attention to boats and stay at a safe distance from their route.
Who Will Enjoy Sucuraj Beach the Most?
This is a good choice for those who do not need an organized beach.
It will be most suitable for swimmers who enjoy rocks, deep and clear water, fewer people, and easy access to the sea directly from the rocky shore.
For families with small children, Česminica is a better option, and for those who want sand, it is worth heading towards Perni or Mlaska.
Sucuraj Beach by the lighthouse has a completely different appeal – swimming at the very point of Hvar, without many facilities, but with open water and one of the most beautiful views around Sucuraj.
