Dubac Beach – a Hidden Pebble Cove Below Zastražišće
Dubac Beach is located in a small cove surrounded by greenery on the northern coast of Hvar, east of Vela Stiniva. It belongs to the area of Zastražišće and is one of those beaches that is not reached by chance – from the main island road, one must turn towards the sea and descend a local path to the shore.
At the end of the road, there is a small pebble beach, a few houses by the sea, and a very peaceful atmosphere. The cove is surrounded by pine trees, Mediterranean vegetation, and rocky slopes, making Dubac feel much more secluded than the more well-known Vela Stiniva.
A Small Pebble Beach and Very Clear Water
The main part of the beach consists of pebbles, and along the edges of the cove, the shore transitions to rocks and stones. The seabed near the beach is predominantly pebbly and rocky, so Dubac is not a sandy beach.
Entry into the water is relatively natural and without arranged platforms. The depth increases gradually, and due to the rocks, water shoes may be useful, especially for children and sensitive swimmers.
The water is very clear in calm weather, and the rocky edges of the cove are good for swimming along the shore and observing the underwater life.
A Cove for Those Seeking Peace
Dubac does not have the characteristics of a developed tourist beach. There is no long row of apartments, beach bars, sun loungers, or promenades. A few buildings along the shore do not alter the basic impression of a small and fairly isolated cove.
This is precisely its main advantage. Those who wish to spend a day by the sea without many amenities and crowds can find just such an environment here.
On the other hand, one should come prepared to Dubac. It is best to bring all necessary food and drinks, as one should not count on reliable regular hospitality services immediately by the beach.
Natural Shade Along the Edges of the Cove
The pine forest and dense Mediterranean vegetation descend close to the shore, providing natural shade along the edges of the beach and behind the pebbles. However, the amount of shade depends on the time of day and the position of the sun.
Due to the terrain configuration, the sun can disappear earlier in the later part of the day behind the surrounding slopes than on more open beaches. This can be pleasant in the middle of summer, but it is useful to know if one is coming to Dubac specifically for late afternoon sunbathing.
How to Get to Dubac Beach?
Dubac can be reached by car from the direction of Zastražišće, but access is the most important thing to know before setting off.
After turning away from the main area of Zastražišće towards the coast, one continues along a local road, and a dirt road leads to Dubac. The descent is steep in some places, the road is narrow, and there is not much space for passing. The condition of the surface may change after winter or heavy rains.
For drivers who are not accustomed to narrow island dirt roads, Dubac is not among the easiest beaches to access. It should not be automatically assumed that an off-road vehicle is necessary, but the access should not be compared to the asphalt road leading to Vela Stiniva.
If the car is low or one does not want to risk driving on poor dirt roads, it is advisable to assess the current condition of the road before descending.
Parking Near the Cove
There is limited space near the cove where vehicles can be parked close to the beach, but Dubac does not have a large organized public parking area.
This means that during the summer, parking should be done carefully, without blocking access to houses or the ability for other vehicles to turn around. Private spaces next to houses should also not be considered public parking.
Due to the limited space, the best advantage is to arrive early when it is easier to find a suitable spot.
Arriving by Boat is Much Simpler
Dubac is a natural small cove, and it is much easier to access from the sea than from land. During the summer, smaller boats and vessels can be seen in the cove.
This does not mean that there is an organized public mooring along the shore. If arriving by one's own boat, one should account for anchoring and be mindful of local boats and swimming areas. The cove is also used as an anchorage in nautical sources.
The Bora Wind Can Completely Change the Cove
Dubac is located on the northern side of Hvar, and like other coves in this part of the island, it is sensitive to the bora and other northern winds.
In calm weather, the sea in the cove can be almost completely tranquil, but before descending the poor road, it is certainly wise to check the wind. If strong bora is blowing, it is more practical to look for a beach on the southern side of the island.
Dubac or Vela Stiniva?
Although they are relatively close to each other, these two coves offer quite different experiences.
Vela Stiniva has an asphalt access, more houses, the restaurant Šer Zane, and Buffet Kod Mate, and is generally more practical for a full-day family stay.
Dubac is smaller, quieter, and simpler, but it has a more challenging dirt road access and lacks reliable amenities.
If comfort is a priority, Vela Stiniva is more practical. If one is looking for a small pebble cove without much tourist infrastructure, Dubac is a more interesting option.
