Kruševa Beach – A Quiet Cove on the Northern Coast of Hvar
Kruševa Beach is located on the northern coast of Hvar, beneath Zastražišće, in a small cove away from the main island road and larger tourist areas. It is not easily accessible – one must intentionally descend towards the sea via a local road – but this limited access is one reason why Kruševa has retained a very peaceful character.
At the bottom of the cove, there is a small pebble beach, a few structures by the sea, and exceptionally clear water. There are no beach bars, restaurants, sun loungers, or other typical tourist facilities. Kruševa is primarily a beach for those seeking tranquility, swimming, and a few hours by the sea without many people around.
Small Pebble Beach at the End of the Cove
The main beach at Kruševa is pebbly, with rocky areas at the edges of the cove. It is not a large beach, but rather a relatively short stretch of shore that corresponds to the size of the cove itself.
Entry into the water is over pebbles and stones. Closer to the shore, the bottom is rockier and pebbly, while in the deeper part of the cove, the seabed transitions to sand and areas covered with marine vegetation. Nautical sources indicate that this sandy bottom is a reason why anchoring in Kruševa holds well.
Footwear for the water is not necessary for everyone, but it can be useful due to the pebbles and rocky parts along the beach edges.
The Sea is the Main Reason to Visit
Kruševa does not have many distractions from the sea. In calm weather, the water is very clear, and due to the small number of houses and the almost complete absence of tourist infrastructure, the cove feels significantly more natural than more famous beaches on Hvar.
The rocky sides of the cove are interesting for swimming along the shore and observing the underwater world with a mask and snorkel. The water relatively quickly transitions from light shades near the shore to a deeper blue color towards the exit of the cove.
If the goal is simply peaceful swimming and a few hours without crowds, Kruševa is just such a location.
No Restaurants, Beach Bars, or Beach Services
At Kruševa, one should not expect any hospitality offerings. The current local guide explicitly describes Dubac and Kruševa as beaches without facilities, so water, food, and everything else needed for a stay should be brought along.
There is no organized rental of sun loungers and umbrellas, showers, or typical beach services.
This is an important difference compared to nearby Vela Stiniva, where there is a café Kod Mate and restaurant Šer Zane, or Pokrivenik, which also has hospitality offerings.
How Much Natural Shade is Available?
Kruševa is surrounded by rocky slopes and Mediterranean vegetation, but the beach itself is not one where one should expect plenty of safe natural shade throughout the day.
Along certain edges of the cove and vegetation, it is possible to find some shade depending on the position of the sun, but for a full day stay, it is more practical to bring an umbrella or other personal protection.
Especially during July and August, it is not advisable to plan an entire day at this beach without sun protection.
Access to Kruševa Requires Caution
Access is one of the most important practical pieces of information for this beach.
From Zastražišće towards Kruševa, a local road leads through olive groves and rocky landscapes towards the northern coast. Along the way to Kruševa, documented old Hvar trails can be found, indicating that one passes through the traditional agricultural landscape of Zastražišće.
The road to Kruševa is described as steep, narrow, and occasionally poorly maintained, with little room for passing. The wider network of roads to the more remote coves of Zastražišće mostly includes gravel and dirt sections, so Kruševa should not be presented as a beach that is easily accessed via a quality asphalt road all the way to the sea.
The exact length of the unpaved section should not be specified as the condition and maintenance of the local road can change.
Extra caution is required for very low vehicles, and for drivers not accustomed to narrow island roads, Vela Stiniva or Pokrivenik may be simpler choices.
What About Parking?
At Kruševa, one should not expect a large organized public parking area. In the cove, there are holiday homes that have their own private parking spaces, but these belong to their guests and are not parking for beach visitors. Accommodation directly next to Kruševa explicitly advertises private parking as part of the property.
If coming just for swimming, the car should be parked only where permitted and where it will not block access to houses, turning vehicles, or local road passage.
Due to limited space, arriving earlier in the day makes more sense than attempting to descend into the cove during the busiest part of summer.
Arriving by Boat is Much Simpler
Kruševa is particularly interesting from the sea. The current guide estimates that a boat ride from Vela Stiniva or Pokrivenik takes about ten minutes, making arrival by boat much simpler than navigating the challenging local road.
The cove is also used as an anchorage. It is sheltered from most wind directions, while being more open to the northeast wind. Depths for anchoring range approximately from 2 to 20 meters, and the bottom is sandy and partially covered with marine plants.
This does not mean that there is an organized public mooring. Private moorings near houses should not be automatically used as public moorings.
Bura and Northeast Wind
Although Kruševa is quite well sheltered inland, it is located on the northern side of Hvar, and its weak point is the northeast direction. Nautical data indicates that the cove is well protected from other winds, but not from the northeast.
Therefore, before descending the challenging road, it is worth checking the wind and sea conditions. If a strong bura or northeast wind is blowing, it does not make much sense to go through the entire approach only to find rougher seas at the end.
In stable summer weather, Kruševa shows a completely different face – a very calm small cove and clear water with almost no traffic along the shore.
Kruševa, Dubac, or Vela Stiniva?
These three beaches are located on the same northern coast of Zastražišće, but they are not the same type of outing.
Vela Stiniva is far more practical: asphalt access, more space, a restaurant, café, and a more developed small settlement by the sea.
Dubac and Kruševa are much simpler and quieter coves, without tourist facilities and with more challenging access. The current local guide treats them together as beaches that "reward the effort" needed to reach them.
Kruševa is therefore most suitable for visitors who do not mind a poorer local road and who are specifically looking for a beach where not much will happen during the day except swimming and resting.
