Gromin Dolac Beach – A Hidden Pebble Cove Under the Cliffs on the Southern Coast of Hvar

Gromin Dolac Beach is located in a wild and sparsely developed area on the southern coast of Hvar, a few kilometers east of Zaval. Access is via a narrow unpaved road, which is one reason why the beach remains significantly quieter than the bathing spots in Zaval even in the height of summer.

The cove is surrounded by steep rocky slopes, agaves, and Mediterranean greenery. The main part of the beach consists of smaller pebbles, and the water is very clear. Above the shore, there is a small Wilson's Beach Bar, part of the nearby Cast Away eco-village.

This is a place for a full day by the sea, especially if you do not mind a few kilometers of driving on unpaved roads in exchange for tranquility, nature, and one of the most secluded beaches in this part of Hvar.

What is Gromin Dolac Beach Like?

The beach is situated in a small natural cove beneath steep slopes.

The central part of the shore is covered with smaller pebbles and stones, while the edges transition to larger rocks and boulders. The beach is not as wide as larger developed bathing areas, but there is enough space for towels and a peaceful stay by the sea.

The rocks behind and around the beach are particularly interesting. In some places, they create natural overhangs and hollows, with large agaves and other Mediterranean plants growing above them.

The entire cove thus has a much wilder appearance compared to the beaches in the populated area of Zaval.

Entering the Water

The easiest entry is from the central pebbly area.

The bottom near the shore consists of smaller stones and pebbles, and the depth increases gradually, making entry comfortable. Towards the edges of the cove, the seabed becomes rockier.

Water shoes are not necessary in the main area, but they are useful if you wish to move around the rocky parts of the beach.

Crystal Clear Water

One of the main advantages of Gromin Dolac is its very clear water.

The cove is far from larger settlements, marinas, and intense maritime traffic, so on calm days, the bottom is clearly visible several meters from the shore.

The light pebbles along the beach give the water a turquoise color, which quickly transitions to deep blue towards the open part of the Šćedro Channel.

In stronger southern winds, the beach becomes more exposed to waves, making it best suited for days when the sea is calm.

Natural Shade

Most of the pebbly beach is exposed to the sun.

Some shade is provided during parts of the day by high cliffs and natural overhangs, but their position depends on the time of day, and it is not wise to rely on having a shaded spot for the entire day.

For longer stays, an umbrella is useful, especially in July and August.

Wilson's Beach Bar

One of the unique features of this otherwise very isolated beach is the Wilson's Beach Bar, located right next to the beach area.

The bar belongs to the Cast Away eco-village and has a distinctly relaxed, Robinson Crusoe-like character. It offers cold drinks, beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic cocktails, as well as simple snacks.

In the surrounding area, there are sun loungers, hammocks, and resting spots, allowing for a break from the sun without returning to Zaval.

Do not expect a classic restaurant with an extensive menu – for a proper meal, it is better to bring food or plan a meal in Zaval.

Cast Away and the Robinson Crusoe Atmosphere

Above the sea is the Cast Away Eco Village, a small Robinson Crusoe-style settlement with wooden houses set in nature.

This gives this part of the coast a special ambiance: hammocks, wooden houses, a small beach bar, and almost complete absence of typical tourist development.

Even if you do not stay in Cast Away, the beach is accessible to bathers and can be visited during the day.

Snorkeling

The sea along the rocky edges of the cove is good for light snorkeling.

In front of the central part, the bottom is simpler, with pebbles and stones, while larger rock blocks and crevices appear along the side cliffs.

Visibility is good when the sea is calm, so it is worth bringing a mask and snorkel.

How to Get to Gromin Dolac Beach?

From Zaval, you should take the unsealed road east towards Gromin Dolac.

It is approximately 4 kilometers of unpaved road from Zaval to the beach area. The road passes through vineyards, olive groves, and almost uninhabited landscapes on the southern side of Hvar.

You will reach Gromin Dolac after about 3.5 kilometers, and the beach area continues for a few hundred meters.

The road is passable for regular passenger cars, but you should drive slowly. In some sections, it is very narrow, and passing another vehicle may require backing up to the nearest widening.

After a few dry summer days, expect a lot of dust.

Parking

At the final approach, there is no large organized public parking area.

You can leave your car in the available space along the end of the unpaved approach above the beach, ensuring that you do not block access for other vehicles.

From the car, it is a short walk down to the sea.

In July and August, it is easiest to arrive early in the day, as parking space is limited, and later you may have to park further away.

Is it Suitable for Small Children?

The sea and the main pebbly part of the beach may be pleasant for children, but Gromin Dolac is not among the most practical family beaches on Hvar.

The reason is not the entry into the sea but the long unpaved access, limited parking, and lack of typical infrastructure.

For families for whom this access is not a problem, the beach can be excellent, especially due to its tranquility and clean water. For strollers, small children, and guests who want all amenities right by the beach, the beaches in Zaval are more practical.

Do Not Confuse It with Octopus Beach

Between Zaval and Gromin Dolac, there are several small natural coves.

One of them is Octopus Beach, which often appears on foreign maps and tourist websites.

This is not Gromin Dolac Beach.

Octopus Beach is located further west towards Zaval, while Gromin Dolac Beach is below the area of the Gromin Dolac settlement itself. If you are exploring the coast over several days, both are worth visiting as they have a similar natural character, but they are two separate beaches.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

For driving and parking, it is best to set off in the morning.

At that time, the unpaved road is quieter, it is easier to find a parking spot, and the sea is often the calmest.

The beach is particularly pleasant in June and September when the feeling of the tourist season almost completely disappears.

If you stay until evening, plan your return along the unpaved road before complete darkness if you are not familiar with it.

Who is Gromin Dolac Beach Best Suited For?

This is not a beach for guests who want asphalt to the sea, large parking areas, showers, and several restaurants.

Gromin Dolac is best suited for those willing to travel a few kilometers on unpaved roads to enjoy a quiet pebble cove, very clean water, and an almost entirely natural environment.

Wilson's Beach Bar provides just enough amenities for a cold drink and a break, while the rest of the experience is made up of rocks, sea, and the silence of the southern coast of Hvar.
