Molva Beach in Zavala – A Small Pebble Cove Among Reddish Rocks and Crystal-Clear Water
Molva Beach is one of the smaller and more beautiful natural beaches in Zavala. It is nestled between rocky parts of the coast, a few minutes' walk from the main coastal area of the village, and is accessible via a walking path that connects the beaches and small coves along the sea.
Molva is not a large or developed tourist beach. The central part consists of pebbles, surrounded by characteristic reddish-brown rocks, and the entire cove opens up to the clear waters of the southern side of Hvar and Šćedro.
It is particularly beautiful in the morning when the sea is calm, and the turquoise color of the shallows is most pronounced.
A Small Natural Cove
Molva is small enough to be viewed in its entirety at a glance.
In the center, there is a short pebble beach, while rocky areas extend on both sides where one can also find space for a towel and sunbathing. Along one part of the coast, there is a smaller concrete area that provides bathers with additional space above the water.
The cove is surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation but is not hidden under dense pine forests. The view towards the open sea remains completely unobstructed.
Pebbles, Rocks, and Characteristic Coastal Color
Molva is easily distinguishable from some neighboring beaches by the reddish and ochre rocks that surround the pebbly area.
The main part of the beach has a mixture of smaller and medium-sized pebbles. Towards the edges, the stones become larger, and the shore transitions into natural rocks.
The central part is the most comfortable for lying down, while the rocks are a good choice if you want to be a bit separated from other bathers.
Entering the Sea
The easiest access is from the pebbly part.
Underfoot are pebbles, and further out, larger stones and rocks appear. The depth gradually increases to a moderate level, without a sudden drop right at the shore.
Due to the larger stones in the water, water shoes can be very useful, especially for children and those who find walking on pebbles uncomfortable.
Exceptionally Clear Water
The water at Molva is very transparent, which is its greatest advantage.
On a calm day, pebbles and larger rocks on the bottom are clearly visible through the water. The shallows near the light-colored stones have a pronounced turquoise color, while the deeper areas quickly transition to dark blue.
In the morning, the sea is usually the calmest, while during stronger southern winds, as with other beaches in Zavala, waves can enter the cove.
A Small Grotto by the Shore
One of the features that distinguishes Molva from surrounding bathing areas is a small rock hollow resembling a grotto at the edge of the beach.
This is not a cave for excursions but a natural feature of the coast that further emphasizes the rocky character of the cove.
With such rocky edges, the sea is more interesting for snorkeling.
Is There Shade?
On the beach itself, one should not expect true natural shade for most of the day.
Vegetation and pines are located above the beach and along the walking path, but the sun reaches most of the shore.
If you plan to stay at Molva for several hours, an umbrella and good sun protection are very useful.
Snorkeling
Molva is suitable for those who enjoy swimming and exploring the coast.
In front of the pebbly area, the bottom is simpler, but larger underwater rocks and crevices appear towards the edges. The water is very clear, so visibility is good even without going far from the shore.
The most interesting areas are the rocky edges of the cove, especially when the sea is completely calm.
Quieter than Larger Beaches
Due to its small size, Molva can fill up quickly, but it does not have the character of a busy beach.
Most bathers arrive on foot from accommodations in Zavala or during walks along the coast. There is no large parking lot, beach bar, or other facilities that would attract a large number of daily visitors.
In June and September, it is often very quiet. In July and August, it is advisable to arrive early, as even a few extra towels can significantly change the impression on such a small beach.
No Dining Facilities on the Beach
There are no restaurants or beach bars at Molva.
Food and drinks should be brought along or one can return to the central part of Zavala, where restaurants and bars are located.
For a few hours of swimming, it is sufficient to bring water, a towel, and sun protection. For a full day, it is useful to bring some food as well.
How to Get to Molva?
The most pleasant way to arrive is by walking along the coastal path through Zavala.
The path connects several small beaches and bathing areas, so Molva can easily be combined with Skalinada or other nearby coves. The access is not long or particularly demanding, but in some parts, the path is uneven.
It is not possible to reach the pebbly beach by car.
If you are staying in Zavala, walking along the coast is the most practical way to get there.
Parking
Molva does not have parking directly by the beach.
It is best to leave the car in public parking spaces in Zavala and then continue on foot along the coastal path. During July and August, spots closer to the shore fill up quickly, so it is easier to park in the morning.
For guests staying in Zavala, a car is generally not needed to visit Molva.
View Towards Šćedro
From the beach, there is a view across the open sea towards Šćedro, which follows almost the entire southern coast of Zavala.
The combination of greenery above the cove, warm colors of the rocks, turquoise shallows, and dark blue sea makes Molva particularly photogenic.
The most beautiful colors are usually during clear mornings and early afternoons.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
During July and August, it is best to arrive in the morning.
You will find it easier to secure a spot on the small pebbly area, the sun is not yet strong, and the sea is usually calmer.
June and September are even better if you prefer peace and more space. The water is already warm enough for swimming, and there are significantly fewer people on the coastal path and beaches.
Who is Molva Best For?
Molva is for those who prefer small natural coves over large developed beaches.
There are no sun loungers, beach bars, or large parking areas, but there is a nice pebbly beach, unusual rocks, very clean water, and the opportunity to spend several hours almost completely away from tourist infrastructure.
For families with children, it can be pleasant due to the pebbly entry, but due to the lack of shade and the need to bring everything with you, it is not as practical as larger developed beaches.
For couples, good swimmers, and guests who enjoy exploring the coast on foot, Molva is one of the nicer small bathing spots in Zavala.
