Skalinada Beach in Zavala – small pebbles, crystal-clear water, and shade by the beach bar
Skalinada Beach is located on the southern coast of Hvar, in the western part of Zavala, just below the Skalinada hotel and restaurant. It is a small, well-maintained pebble beach with very clean water, easy access, and a nice view towards Šćedro.
Unlike some completely natural coves around Zavala, Skalinada features the Beach & Cocktail Bar Terra Nova directly above the beach, and a few steps away is the Skalinada restaurant. Therefore, Skalinada is a good choice when you want to spend a few hours or an entire day by the sea while having shade, drinks, and food nearby.
The beach is particularly pleasant for families with children due to the smaller pebbles and relatively easy access to the water.
What is Skalinada Beach like?
Skalinada is a narrow pebble beach situated between natural stone edges of the coast.
The main area is covered with smaller light pebbles, which are more comfortable for lying down and walking on compared to larger stones found on some other beaches on the southern side of Hvar.
The beach is not large, so during the peak summer months, it can feel crowded even when there are not many people. In the morning and outside of July and August, the atmosphere is much calmer.
The water is extremely clear and takes on a turquoise color right at the entrance.
Entering the water and the seabed
Entry into the water is gradual, and the seabed along the shore mainly consists of small pebbles.
For this reason, Skalinada is one of the more pleasant beaches in Zavala for children and individuals who do not prefer large rocks or steep drops into the depths.
A bit further from the shore, larger pebbles and rocky sections appear. Water shoes are not mandatory but can be useful if you are sensitive to stones or plan to explore the rocky areas of the beach.
The water gradually becomes deeper, without a sudden drop right at the shore.
Crystal-clear water
Skalinada has what most visitors return for on the southern side of Hvar – very clear water.
On calm days, the water is almost completely transparent, and the light seabed creates pronounced blue and turquoise shades. It is most beautiful in the morning, before the daily wind picks up and before the beach fills with bathers.
As the coast of Zavala faces south, waves can appear during stronger southern winds. Swimming is less calm than during the maestral or calm conditions.
Natural shade
There is not much permanent natural shade directly on the pebble beach.
Some shade is provided by pine trees and Mediterranean vegetation along the edges of the beach, but the position of the shade changes throughout the day. If you plan to stay longer on the beach, an umbrella is a good idea.
The most comfortable place to take a break from the sun is a few steps above the beach, on the shaded terrace of the Beach & Cocktail Bar Terra Nova.
Beach & Cocktail Bar Terra Nova
One of the biggest advantages of Skalinada is Terra Nova, a beach and cocktail bar located right above the sea.
The terrace is shaded, surrounded by oleanders and Mediterranean greenery, with a view over the beach towards the open sea.
They offer coffee, cold drinks, and cocktails. A specialty of the bar is homemade lemonade made from lemons from their own garden, with sage syrup and fresh mint.
This is a good place to take a break during the hottest part of the day without needing to leave the beach.
Restaurant Skalinada
Right next to the beach is the Skalinada Restaurant.
The menu focuses on Dalmatian and Mediterranean cuisine, featuring fresh fish, shellfish, and other seafood, along with vegetables, fruits, and local wines.
The large terrace of the restaurant overlooks Šćedro and Korčula, making it easy to combine swimming with lunch or dinner by the sea.
Due to the restaurant and bar, Skalinada is one of the more practical beaches in Zavala for a full-day stay.
Is it good for children?
Yes, Skalinada is a very good choice for families with children.
The beach is covered with smaller pebbles, the entry into the water is relatively gentle, and food, drinks, and shade are located just above the shore.
However, the beach is small, so it is more practical to arrive in the morning when it is easier to find enough space by the sea.
During stronger southern winds, waves should be expected, as on other beaches along the open southern coast.
Snorkeling
In front of the central part of the beach, the seabed is mainly pebbly, while the edges transition into rocks and larger stones.
The ends of the beach are particularly interesting for snorkeling, as there are more crevices and marine life around the rocks.
Due to the high transparency of the water, visibility is very good when there are no waves.
How to get to Skalinada Beach?
From the central coastal part of Zavala, Skalinada can be reached on foot along the coast, which is also the most pleasant way to arrive if you are already staying in the area.
The beach can also be accessed by road from the upper part of Zavala. The last part goes through local roads that are relatively narrow, as is common in the area.
If you are coming from Jelsa, you drive through Pitava and through the Pitve tunnel – Zavala, and after descending towards the sea, continue towards the western part of the coastal settlement.
Parking at Skalinada Beach
Above the beach and along the access road, there is a limited number of parking spaces.
Skalinada does not have a large public parking area directly by the shore, so during the peak season, the nearest spots can fill up quickly. If you are coming by car in July or August, it is best to arrive in the morning.
From the parking area to the beach, there is no long or demanding walk.
If you are staying in the coastal part of Zavala, it is much more pleasant to leave your car at your accommodation and walk to Skalinada along the coast.
Coastal promenade
There is a pleasant coastal route leading to Skalinada that connects several beaches and swimming spots in Zavala.
This is practical if you want to change beaches during the day or take an evening stroll along the sea without using a car.
Along the coast, small pebble beaches, rocks, houses, and Mediterranean greenery alternate, making the walk interesting even outside swimming times.
View towards Šćedro
From the beach, there is a view towards the island of Šćedro, which stretches in front of the entire southern coast of Zavala.
On very clear days, the view extends towards Korčula and Pelješac.
In the late afternoon, the sun illuminates the sea at a lower angle, highlighting the turquoise shades along the coast and the dark blue color of the deeper sea.
When is the best time to visit?
In July and August, the best time to arrive is in the morning.
At this time, the sea is usually the calmest, temperatures are more pleasant, and it is easier to find parking and a spot on the beach.
June and September are excellent for those who prioritize peace. The sea is suitable for swimming, and there are significantly fewer people on the beach.
Late afternoon is also nice for swimming and drinks on the terrace of Terra Nova, when the highest daily heat subsides.
Who is Skalinada Beach best for?
Skalinada is particularly good for families with children, couples, and guests who want a natural pebble beach with amenities nearby.
It is not large or completely hidden, but it offers a very pleasant combination of smaller pebbles, clear water, easy access, and a bar and restaurant right by the beach.
If you are staying in Zavala, this is one of the beaches that is definitely worth trying at least once, and for many, the convenience and calm atmosphere become reasons to return.
