BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION

Murter is a settlement in the northwestern part of the island of the same name. It spreads towards the Hramina bay, where a marina has been built, towards the Slanica bay, which is the most beautiful beach on the Šibenik Riviera. In the bay of the same name there is also a campsite and the Colentum hotel. It is located on the regional road, and from the mainland it can be reached via the town of Tisno, which are connected by a bridge. The settlement has a permanent population of 2,000 who are engaged in agriculture, fishing and tourism. In the summer months, this number quadruples.

CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS

Murter was first called Veliko Selo, then Srimač, and since 1715 it has had its current name. At the foot of the Gradina hill, in the Hramina bay and elsewhere, there are remains of Roman buildings, the remains of the ancient settlement of Colentum. On the Gradina cape there is a local cemetery, in which ancient Croatian graves have been found. In the cemetery is the Church of Our Lady in Gradina from the 17th century. The parish church of St. Michael (reconstructed in 1770) has a Baroque altar, the work of masters Pio and Vicko dall'Acqua and an icon of the Cretan-Venetian school. In the parish office there is a Gothic-Renaissance processional cross and several valuable paintings. Above the village, on the Vršina hill, is the Church of St. Roko from 1760.

BEACHES

The beaches in Murter are Slanica, Luke, Čigrada and Podvrške. The most popular on the island is Slanica, which has a wealth of sports and catering facilities, is suitable for children and has a toilet and shower. The city beach with concrete blocks is Luka, and there are two others near the town that also have all the accompanying facilities, are sandy and pebble, suitable for children and the elderly because they have the shade of pine trees.

OTHER CONTENT

The restaurant offer is extremely large. You can find the flavors of Dalmatia in the restaurants Boba, Malo Misto, Mate, Račić, Čigrada, Fabro and others, then in the taverns Balarina, Pjero, Boškin škver and in the pizzerias Lav, Barbara, Lanterna, Mareta and Tunga Re. During the summer you can attend concerts of classical and popular music, and the folk church singing is particularly impressive. A major cultural event is the regatta of traditional boats called Latinsko idro, which is held every year at the end of September. During the season you will also have fun at numerous folk events arranged by the local tourist board. The Murter-Kornati regatta in April is a kind of introduction to the season.

SPORT

There is no shortage of sports facilities. There are tennis courts, basketball courts, five-a-side football courts and bocce courts. You can sail, dive, jog, cycle, rent a boat and explore the Kornati archipelago, join one of the numerous sports competitions or try your hand at water sports.

WHAT TO DO AND EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES

Private boatmen can take you to the Kornati and Krka national parks. Nearby is the Vrana Lake Nature Park, and you can also take day trips to Šibenik, Split, Trogir or Zadar.

ACCOMMODATION

In the Slanica bay there are the Colentum hotel and the Slanica camp, and near the town beach Luka there is a guesthouse. There are numerous apartments, fishermen's houses and holiday villas available. For those arriving by boat, Murter offers several marinas that provide comfortable and safe accommodation in its bays.
