BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Metajna is a village located in the northeastern part of the island of Pag, in the bay of the same name. From the northwest it is connected by road to the towns of Zubovići and Kustići, and to Novalja (12km), the center of the northern part of the island of Pag. It is located right on the sea and the surrounding hills, and to the south is a green valley with low Mediterranean vegetation. The village offers a view of the entire Bay of Pag and beyond. Regular bus lines operate between Metajna and Novalja. You can reach the island of Pag, in the town of Metajna, by ferry line Prizna-Žigljen or across the Pag Bridge from the south.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
Metajna belongs to a group of villages that the islanders call Barbati. Although there is much evidence of the existence of settlements even before the arrival of the Croats on the island of Pag, today's Metajna was founded sometime in the late 17th or early 18th century with the migration of the Kurilić and Dapković families (today Datković) from the town of Pag to fish for tuna and other fish. Metajna was also called Južno Selo, and it is assumed that the name Metajna was derived from the word "metva", as the islanders call it. In Metajna is the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was built in 1487. The church bell dates from 1521, making it the third oldest bell in the Zadar Archdiocese.
BEACHES
The pebble beach Ručica overlooks Pag and can be reached by walking through the canyon. The second beach is Beritnica, where three large stone rocks are placed in the shallow sea, a beautiful natural installation.
OTHER CONTENT
Gastronomes will enjoy Pag cheese and lamb, grapes and figs, freshly caught fish and homemade prosecco in the taverns Sidro, Riva, Galeb, Mala ruka and Girica and in the roastery Kanjon. In summer, fishermen's nights are held on the waterfront with live music, homemade wine and fresh fish. You can party long into the night in nearby Novalja.
SPORT
Above Beritnica beach rises the famous Stogaj climbing wall, one of the most spectacular stone towers on the Adriatic. Sports and recreational facilities are also available on most of the local beaches, and in addition to recreation at sea, beach volleyball is particularly popular.
WHAT TO DO AND EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES
Pag itself is diverse and interesting to explore, and is located in an attractive area, near a large number of national parks (Kornati, Plitvice Lakes, Paklenica and Northern Velebit); nature parks (Velebit, Vrana Lake) and the historic towns of Nin, Zadar and Šibenik.
