BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION

Barbat is a village on the southwestern coast of the island of Rab. Barbat is located on the coast of the Barbat Channel and has about 1,200 inhabitants. You can reach Barbat by car from two directions. The first option is to arrive at the Stinica pier, which is located 5 kilometers from Jablanac near Senj. After that, you can take a ferry from Stinica to the Rab pier Mišnjak, which is 6 kilometers from Barbat. The second option is to cross the Krk Bridge by car and arrive at the Krk pier Valbiska, after which you can take a ferry to the Lopar pier on the island of Rab. Lopar is 15 kilometers from Barbat. Rijeka Airport near Omišlje on the island of Krk is the closest destination for arriving by plane. The train station in Rijeka is the closest place for arriving by train. Rijeka is about 115 kilometers from Barbat and after arriving by train you have to change to a bus that goes directly to Barbat from the Rijeka bus station. From Rijeka, you can also travel by catamaran to the island of Rab. The catamaran travels to the port in the town of Rab where boat arrivals are scheduled, after which you can take a local bus to Barbat, which is only 5 kilometers away from Rab.

CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS

The settlement of Barbat was inhabited in the ancient period, as confirmed by many Roman sites, but one of the earliest evidences of settlement is the early Byzantine fortress of St. Cosmas and Damian from the 6th century, which is located at the foot of the nearby Kamenjak. The fortress dates back to the time of the Byzantine emperor Justinian's campaign on the eastern coast of the Adriatic, and inside it are the remains of a church from that time. On the site of the present parish church in Barbat, there was a Benedictine abbey of Sancti Stephani de Postran from the 11th to the 15th centuries. Next to the present church is an early Christian sarcophagus from the 5th century.

BEACHES

Barbat is very famous for its Pudarica beach, which is 3 kilometers from the town itself. The beach is particularly interesting because it has a separate nudist section, is home to the famous Santos nightclub, and is only 200 meters from the uninhabited islet of Dolin. The pebble beach of Mirine is another nearby beach that is very popular, and nearby is another naturist beach, Ravnice. Debelić beach is another very interesting destination for tourists, and there are a number of smaller beaches and coves to choose from in the area.

Barbat is a settlement in an agricultural area and is very famous for its olive growing and wine production, and the basis of the economy is ecological production, which is an integral part of the tourist offer. The centers of the gastronomic offer in Barbat are the restaurants Leut, Elizabeta, Barbat, Bepo, Iva and Aco. Enjoying refreshing drinks and night entertainment is offered by the Classic Bar, Bar Kolo and Captain's Club Rab. The center of Rab's nightlife is the Santos club, which is located right on the beach near Barbat. The central event in Barbat during the summer season is Karmenica. The nearest excursion destination is Mount Kamenjak, which is full of rare vegetation, beautiful mountain roads through nature and offers a great view from the 408-meter peak, which is the highest peak on the island of Rab. A day trip can also be to the nearby town of Banjol, and the possibility of a boat trip is offered in the town of Rab, only 5 kilometers away. Boat trips can be half-day or full-day arrangements and during the ride you can visit the peculiarities of the island of Rab or neighboring islands. Those who want to take a longer trip can visit some of the national parks such as Plitvice Lakes, Northern Velebit or Paklenica.
