Mezuporat Beach Biševo – Swimming near the Blue Cave
Mezuporat Beach is located in the bay of the same name on the eastern side of Biševo, just a few minutes by boat from the Blue Cave. For most visitors, Mezuporat is the first encounter with Biševo, as boats from Komiža dock here and it serves as the main departure point for small boats that take visitors to the Blue Cave.
Behind the dock and the daily boat traffic lies a small natural pebble beach where swimming is quite pleasant. The water is exceptionally clear, the bay is surrounded by rocky slopes, and the light seabed along the shore gives the water characteristic turquoise shades.
However, Mezuporat is not primarily a beach for all-day lounging. Its character is completely different from Porat and Salbunara: here, boats, visitors to the Blue Cave, and local vessels alternate throughout the day, making the beach best suited for short swims before or after visiting the cave.
Small pebble beach on the eastern side of Biševo
While Porat and Salbunara are sandy beaches, Mezuporat is the only one of the three main beaches on Biševo that is pebble.
The beach is small and located in the inner part of the bay. Along with the pebbles, there are rocky and stony areas, especially towards the edges.
Entry into the sea from the main part of the beach is relatively easy. The bottom initially consists of pebbles and stones, and a bit further out, darker areas covered with marine vegetation appear.
Due to the very clean water, the bottom is clearly visible, and the contrast between the light stones and darker underwater surfaces gives the bay a beautiful combination of turquoise and deep blue colors.
The water is exceptionally clear
Biševo is surrounded by open sea and has no large settlements or sources of pollution, so the transparency of the water at Mezuporat is very good.
On a calm day, the rocks and seabed can be clearly seen from the shore.
If you bring a mask and snorkel, it is more interesting to head towards the rocky edges of the bay rather than just staying in front of the main beach. There is more underwater life around the rocks, and the seabed configuration is more varied.
However, when swimming towards the middle of the bay, special caution is needed due to boat traffic.
Important: There are many boats at Mezuporat
The most significant practical difference between Mezuporat and other Biševo beaches is the boat traffic.
This is the main access port for the Blue Cave.
During the summer, regular boat lines from Komiža, taxi boats, private vessels, and excursion boats dock here, while small official boats continuously transport visitors to the cave and back to the bay.
Therefore, it is advisable not to swim near the docks or to swim through the paths of boats entering and exiting.
For swimming, it is best to stay close to the beach and the side parts of the bay, away from the dock.
This is especially important with children.
Beach at the departure point for the Blue Cave
The main reason nearly all visitors become acquainted with Mezuporat is the Blue Cave.
The larger boat that arrives at Biševo does not enter the cave itself. Visitors transfer to small boats in Mezuporat that can pass through the low sea entrance.
As a result, a considerable amount of time can be spent in the bay waiting for the tour.
If weather conditions and visit organization allow, the small beach is very practical for a quick swim before or after the cave.
Instead of spending time exclusively at the dock, a few dozen meters away, one can enter the clear Biševo sea.
When is Mezuporat the busiest?
The busiest time is late morning and around noon, precisely when the lighting effect in the Blue Cave is most pronounced.
During this time, the largest number of organized excursions arrive at Biševo.
In July and August, the bay at this time of day can look completely different than early in the morning. Boats come and go, visitors wait their turn, and the hospitality facilities around the dock are full of guests.
If you want a peaceful swim at Mezuporat, early morning or late afternoon is much more pleasant.
At that time, it is much easier to notice how beautiful the bay itself is when the traffic to the Blue Cave decreases.
Is there natural shade?
On the pebble beach itself, one should not count on an abundance of natural shade throughout the day.
There is some vegetation along the edges of the bay and behind the beach, with a few spots that can be shaded at certain times of the day, but Mezuporat does not have a large pine forest like Porat.
If planning to stay longer, it is advisable to have your own sun protection.
This is another reason why Mezuporat is better for short swims than for an entire summer day at the beach.
Are there food and drinks available?
Yes. Mezuporat has several seasonal hospitality establishments, which is quite a good offer for such a small island.
In the immediate area of the dock, there are The Blue Cave Caffe, Le Grand Bleu, and Restaurant Grill bar Robinzon.
For coffee, juice, cold drinks, or a simple snack, the café establishments near the dock are practical, while Robinzon offers a wider selection of grilled dishes, fish, squid, tuna, and meat.
Therefore, there is no need to bring food for a few hours of stay during the main season.
Outside the main summer period, the operation of certain establishments should be checked, as hospitality on Biševo is highly seasonal.
How to get to Mezuporat Beach?
The easiest way to reach it is by boat from Komiža.
The state boat line 612 Komiža – Biševo docks at Mezuporat and then continues to Salbunara and Porat.
This means that the beach can be visited without purchasing an organized excursion.
Another option is a taxi boat, private speedboat, or organized tour to the Blue Cave.
If coming as part of an excursion, it is almost certain that you will pass through Mezuporat anyway, as it is the main point for boarding boats to the cave.
Tourist cars do not reach Biševo, so the usual parking question does not exist here.
The regular line from Komiža allows for a complete excursion
The regular boat line enables a much better acquaintance with Biševo than during a quick organized visit to the Blue Cave.
You can sail to Mezuporat, visit the Blue Cave and take a short swim, and then continue towards the interior of the island or other bays.
The line also connects Salbunara and Porat, so with a good schedule, different parts of Biševo can be linked in one day.
The timetable changes depending on the season and weather conditions, so it is advisable to check current departures, especially the last return option to Komiža.
Can you continue on foot from Mezuporat?
Yes, and Mezuporat is one of the main starting points for exploring Biševo on foot.
A marked trail network called Geostaza Biševo leads from the bay into the interior, connecting almost all significant locations on the island.
From Mezuporat, you can head towards the Visitor Center Blue Cave – Biševo, Poje, and the Church of St. Sylvester, and further towards Stražbenica, Salbunara, and Porat.
This is an excellent way to avoid an immediate return to Komiža after visiting the Blue Cave.
It is advisable to have sneakers or quality sandals, enough water, and sun protection. In July and August, longer walks are best planned for early or later in the day.
Mezuporat or Porat?
These are very different places.
Mezuporat is a small pebble beach and the main transport hub for the Blue Cave. It has more boat traffic and is best suited for short swims during visits to the eastern side of Biševo.
Porat is a large sandy beach on the western side of the island, with a very long shallow area, more natural shade, and several restaurants along the beach.
If you want to spend the whole day swimming, Porat is a better choice.
If you want to visit the Blue Cave, take a short break by the sea, and then continue exploring the island, Mezuporat is more practical.
Mezuporat or Salbunara?
Salbunara is even quieter than Porat.
It is a small sandy cove with very little tourist infrastructure and much less daily traffic.
In comparison, Mezuporat is lively, busy, and practical.
Thus, these three main beaches of Biševo complement each other nicely:
Mezuporat for the Blue Cave and short swims,
Porat for all-day stays and families,
Salbunara for peace and a more natural island feel.
Is Mezuporat suitable for children?
The small pebble beach can be pleasant for children, but boat traffic requires more caution than at Porat or Salbunara.
Children should stay in the area immediately next to the beach, away from the docks and the paths of passing boats.
If you are looking for a few hours of safer and more relaxed swimming with small children, Porat is better due to its sandy bottom and long shallow area.
Mezuporat is more practical as a place for a quick refreshment during excursions.
Arriving by your own boat
Mezuporat has a small dock, mooring area, and anchorage, but it should be noted that this is a very active port.
Regular boats and vessels associated with the Blue Cave tours must have unobstructed access.
Therefore, it is not advisable to occupy space near the dock without checking where it is allowed to stop.
The bay is also sensitive to weather conditions. The local name is associated with the Italian Mezzo Porto, meaning a port that is not entirely safe in all conditions, and caution is especially needed for the bora wind.
For a short daytime visit in calm weather, Mezuporat is very practical, but for anchoring and overnight stays, it is always necessary to check the forecast and actual conditions in the bay.
Mezuporat is also the beginning of another story about Biševo
Most guests experience Mezuporat as a place to board a boat to the Blue Cave as soon as possible.
It is a pity to stop there.
Behind the dock, trails begin leading into the interior of the island, to the Visitor Center, the old settlement of Poje, and the Church of St. Sylvester. In the bay itself, one can swim, and by regular line or on foot, continue to other parts of Biševo.
Thus, Mezuporat is not just a "waiting room for the Blue Cave".
It is one of the three main beaches of Biševo, an important island port, and the best starting point for exploring the eastern and central parts of the island.
If the schedule allows, it is worth staying for at least some time after visiting the cave – swimming in the clear sea, having a drink by the shore, and then deciding whether to take the Geostaza or continue to Porat and Salbunara.
