Porat Beach Biševo – Sand, Shade, and Turquoise Sea
Porat Beach is located on the western side of Biševo Island, in a wide sandy bay facing the open sea. After the Blue Cave, it is one of the places that makes it worthwhile to stay longer on Biševo instead of returning immediately to Komiža on the first boat.
Porat is a true contrast to the rocky beaches of Vis. The shore features fine light sand, the seabed is also sandy, and the depth increases very gradually. Behind the beach, pine trees and Mediterranean greenery provide natural shade. Additionally, there are catering services available during the summer, making Porat one of the more practical beaches for a full day stay on Biševo.
A True Sandy Beach on Biševo
Porat is not a beach where sand only appears on the seabed. The sand extends to the shore and much of the shallow area, allowing for a very different entry into the sea compared to most beaches on Vis.
The sand is fine, the bottom is flat, and there are no large rocks in the main part of the beach. One can walk quite far from the shore before the water becomes significantly deeper; local information indicates over twenty meters of very shallow water.
Due to the light bottom, the water near the shore takes on a very transparent green-turquoise color, and only towards the exit from the bay does it transition to a darker blue.
If you are looking for a beach for long, relaxed swimming rather than just attractive rocks and deep water, Porat is among the more interesting choices in the entire Vis archipelago.
One of the Best Beaches on Biševo for Children
Porat is particularly suitable for families with young children.
There are no large pebbles, the entry into the sea is gentle, and the sandy shallow area provides ample space for water play. Children do not end up in deep water immediately as they might on many rocky beaches of Vis.
The sand is also much more suitable for playing on the shore than large stones, allowing children to spend several hours without needing to be in the water constantly.
Of course, this is an island accessible only by boat, so the biggest challenge for families is not the beach itself but organizing arrival and departure.
Natural Shade Under the Pines
Another significant advantage of Porat is the natural shade.
Pines and other Mediterranean greenery extend behind the beach, and in parts of the shore, it is possible to find shade during the hottest part of the day. This makes Porat much more comfortable for a full day stay compared to open sandy beaches like Zaglav, where one relies almost entirely on an umbrella during midday.
The best spots under the pines during July and August tend to be taken early.
If you want to choose a shaded spot, arriving in the morning is much better than arriving in the middle of the afternoon.
How to Get to Porat Beach?
You cannot reach Porat by car from Vis.
The simplest way is by boat from Komiža, via a taxi boat, organized excursion, or private vessel. Biševo is directly opposite Komiža, making the journey relatively short.
Porat is one of the classic spots where local boats drop off visitors to Biševo.
If you are already coming for the Blue Cave, a good plan is not to return immediately to Komiža but to organize the rest of the day around Porat.
The bay can also be reached on foot across Biševo, as the main bays and settlements are connected by old island paths. This is much more interesting in June, September, or during the morning than in the middle of August.
Blue Cave and Porat in One Day
This is one of the best combinations for a day trip to Biševo.
The Blue Cave is best visited in the late morning when the natural blue light effect is most pronounced, and after that, head towards Porat to spend the rest of the day at the beach.
This way, the excursion does not boil down to just a few minutes in the cave and a boat ride back to Vis.
At Porat, you can have lunch, swim, relax in the shade, and experience Biševo at a much slower pace than during a typical quick excursion.
If you have more time on the island, you can continue from Porat towards Salbunara and the interior of Biševo.
Is There Food and Drink at Porat?
Yes. For such a small and remote island, Porat has a surprisingly good seasonal catering offer.
Along the beach during the summer, Konoba Porat operates, allowing you to have lunch without bringing food from Komiža. The tourist board of Komiža manages the tavern as an official catering establishment at Porat.
The seasonal offer on Biševo does depend on the time of year. If you are coming in May, early June, or later in September, do not assume that all establishments will be operating as they do in mid-August.
It is certainly wise to bring water, regardless of the catering offer.
Sun Loungers or Towels Under the Pines?
During the season, sun loungers and umbrellas may appear on the beach, but Porat is not the type of beach club where the entire shore is covered with rows of loungers.
A large portion of visitors stays on the sand or seeks natural shade under the pines.
This combination of a natural beach and a few basic amenities makes Porat pleasant: it is not a completely wild cove where you need to bring everything for the whole day, but it is also not a large commercial beach.
Swimming and Snorkeling
The main sandy part of Porat is more interesting for calm swimming and playing in the shallow water than for observing underwater life.
If you want to snorkel, you should head towards the rocky edges of the bay, where the sandy bottom transitions to rocks and there is more marine life.
The water is very clear, so visibility is excellent on calm days.
However, in the middle of the bay, one should be cautious of boats and sailboats that come to anchor.
Porat is Also an Important Nautical Bay
The name Porat is not coincidental – the bay has traditionally been one of the more important places for docking and anchoring on the western side of Biševo.
The water in the inner part is very shallow, so the official Vis pilot recommends that larger vessels do not anchor closer than approximately 40 meters from the beach. The bay has space for about ten reasonably spaced anchored boats.
Porat is well protected from multiple wind directions, but it has one significant weakness.
It is completely open to the lebić, or southwest wind, and during stronger maestral winds, the bay can also be uncomfortably choppy. Therefore, calm turquoise water in the middle of a summer day does not mean that Porat is safe for overnight stays without checking the forecast.
Afternoons at Porat are Completely Different
During the day in July and August, Porat can be very lively.
Excursion boats, bathers from other parts of Biševo, and sailors arrive, so do not expect a hidden empty beach just because it is on a small island.
However, the bay calms down sharply after around 5 PM, when a large portion of day-trippers leave by boat towards Komiža and Vis. The official pilot notes this as one of Porat's special features.
If you are staying overnight on Biševo or have private transport that allows for a later return, late afternoon and evening may be the most beautiful part of the day at this beach.
At that time, Porat reveals much more of its true island character.
Porat or Salbunara?
Both are sandy bays on the western side of Biševo, but they have different characters.
Porat is larger, more accessible, and livelier. It has more boat traffic and catering options, making it a better choice for families wanting to spend the whole day in one place.
Salbunara is quieter and more natural, with less tourist traffic and a very interesting sandy landscape.
If you have a whole day on Biševo, it is best not to choose just one. The Blue Cave, Porat, and Salbunara together provide a much more complete picture of the island.
When is the Best Time to Visit Porat?
For a classic day at the beach, morning and late morning are the best times if you want to find a good spot in natural shade.
In the middle of the day, the water is beautifully illuminated, and the colors of the bay are most pronounced, but that is also when there are the most visitors during the peak season.
Later in the afternoon, the number of people drops sharply, making it the best time for peace.
June and September are particularly good for Porat. The water is warm enough, seasonal facilities are mostly operational, and the daily pressure from excursion boats is lower than in mid-July and August.
When planning your arrival by boat, the most important factor is the weather forecast, especially if the wind is blowing from the southwest.
A Beach Worth Staying on Biševo
The Blue Cave is the reason most people first come to Biševo, but Porat is one of the best reasons not to return immediately to Komiža after visiting the cave.
Here, you can do what there is no time for in the Blue Cave – take off your watch, leave your things in the shade, and spend a few hours simply enjoying the sea.
The sand, large shallow area, pines behind the beach, and a few dining options provide Porat with a rare combination of nature and practicality.
It is especially good for families, but also for anyone who wants to experience Biševo as an island, not just as a tourist attraction for twenty minutes after visiting the most famous Croatian sea cave.
