Milna Beach Vis – Sandy Beach with a Long Shallow Area
Milna Beach is located at the bottom of the bay of the same name on the southeastern side of the island of Vis and is one of the few true sandy beaches on the island. It is not large or spectacular due to high cliffs like some other bays on Vis, but it has something that is often much more important for daily swimming – soft sand, an exceptionally long shallow area, and very easy access by car.
It is particularly good for families with small children, as well as for those who do not want to descend steep paths or walk about twenty minutes to the sea every day. A car can be parked nearby, and the beach is located just below the road.
The Sand and Shallow Water for Which Milna is Known
The greatest feature of Milna is the sandy seabed that remains very shallow far from the shore.
At the main part of the beach, entry into the sea is without large pebbles and stone slabs, and the water deepens very slowly. Approximately 30 meters from the shore, the water may still be only knee-deep, which makes Milna one of the most pleasant beaches on Vis for small children.
Adults who enjoy standing and resting in warm shallow water will also find this suitable, while those who want to swim immediately will need to walk quite far to reach deeper water.
Due to this shallow area, Milna is an excellent place for picigin and other ball games in the sea. The flat sandy bottom and large area of shallow water are much more suitable for such games than the pebble and rocky beaches that dominate Vis.
What is the Beach Like?
The main beach is approximately one hundred meters long and gradually narrows towards the western end.
The best part for children and classic swimming is the central sandy strip. Along the edges of the bay, the coast transitions to rockier parts, where a more interesting terrain for snorkeling can be found.
Milna faces east and receives sunlight very early in the morning. The sea is pleasant and warms up quickly during the summer due to the shallow bottom, which is another reason why this beach is so practical for children.
On the other hand, for those seeking shade during the summer, one important detail should be noted.
There is Almost No Natural Shade
At the main part of Milna Beach, one should not expect natural shade before late afternoon.
There are no large pine forests like at Srebrena or tamarisks that would cover a large part of the shore throughout the day. If planning to stay for several hours during July or August, an umbrella is very useful.
During the season, umbrellas and sunbeds can be rented, but if one wants to be completely independent of seasonal offerings, it is best to bring personal sun protection.
Later in the afternoon, the area behind the beach begins to create more shade, making Milna noticeably more comfortable for those avoiding the strongest sun.
Car Access is a Major Advantage of Milna
Unlike the nearby Zaglav, which requires a 10–15 minute walk, Milna Beach can be easily accessed by car.
The beach is located just below the local road through the settlement, and vehicles can be parked in available spaces along the road and in the immediate vicinity.
One should not expect a large paved parking lot with marked hundreds of spaces. This is a small island settlement, and during the peak season, available space along the road can fill up.
However, compared to many other beaches on Vis, Milna is very easy to reach. There is no steep descent, long unpaved paths, or serious walking with towels, coolers, and children's items.
There are two road options to reach Milna from the town of Vis – the older route via Podstražje and the newer access through the Stončica area.
An Excellent Beach for Families with Children
If Vis beaches were compared solely based on practicality for a family with a small child, Milna would rank very high on the list.
The reasons are simple:
the sand is more pleasant than large pebbles, entry into the sea is gentle, the shallow area is vast, there is no need for a long walk from the car, and houses and the settlement are in close proximity.
Children can stay in very shallow water for a long time, build in the sand, and play without constantly crossing sharp stones.
The main drawback is the lack of natural shade, so for a family coming in the middle of the day, sun protection is practically mandatory.
Milna or Zaglav?
This is a natural comparison as Zaglav is located just west of Milna, and both beaches are known for their sand.
Zaglav offers a larger experience if one seeks a more natural beach separated from the road and houses. Its bright sand and more open bay are particularly beautiful, but it requires a walk of about 10–15 minutes from Milna.
Milna is simpler and more practical. The car stays close, the water is extremely shallow, and it is easy to visit for just an hour or two of swimming without much preparation.
If time allows, there is no need to choose just one. The car can be left in Milna, first swim here, and then continue on foot towards Zaglav.
What Else is Around the Beach?
Milna is not an isolated bay without houses. The beach is located in a small tourist settlement of the same name, and along the coast and on the slopes above the sea, there are apartments and holiday homes.
There is also a catering offer nearby, but Milna does not have the quantity of amenities that the town of Vis or Komiža has. For a larger selection of shops, restaurants, and other services, the town of Vis is the most practical option.
Along the coast of Milna, there are several other swimming spots. On the opposite side of the bay, there is a small pebble beach, separated from the main sandy Milna Beach. Therefore, it is good not to confuse every bathing area in the entire bay with the main beach.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
If coming with children, the morning is the best part of the day. The sun is already on the beach, the sand is not yet overheated, it is easier to find a parking spot, and the sea is usually very calm.
During the day, the biggest problem is not access or the sea but the lack of shade.
Late afternoon is also a good choice. The beach gradually receives more shade, the daytime heat weakens, and due to the position of the bay, swimming remains pleasant even after the strongest sun has passed.
In July and August, Milna has more bathers, but it does not have the same feeling of mass arrival as some of the most famous excursion beaches on Vis.
A Beach that Easily Fits into Any Day of Vacation
Milna Beach is not a place that requires an hour's journey for a single photograph. Its advantage is quite the opposite – it is very easy to use.
It can be reached by car almost to the sea, children have dozens of meters of sandy shallows, and if one desires something more natural and secluded, Zaglav is a short walk just around the corner.
For guests staying in Milna, this is a beach that can be visited for just a morning or evening swim. For those coming from other parts of the island, it is particularly interesting if they are looking for a sandy and easily accessible family beach, as such a combination is not common on Vis.
