Zaglav Beach Vis – Sandy Beach near Milna
Zaglav Beach is located on the southeastern side of the island of Vis, in a cove between Milna and Brgujac. Although it is only a short walk from Milna, it is not accessible by car, giving Zaglav the feel of a secluded natural beach.
The main reason to visit is the sand. Zaglav is one of the few true sandy beaches on Vis, featuring light and very fine sand on the shore and in the water. The seabed slopes gradually, and the large shallow area of the cove gives the water a bright turquoise color, making Zaglav appear almost tropical from a distance. The Vis Tourist Board ranks it among the most beautiful sandy beaches in the Adriatic.
Sand and Large Shallow Area
Unlike Srebrena, Stiniva, and most of the well-known beaches on Vis, there are no large pebbles here. Fine sand dominates the shoreline, while small stones appear in some parts of the higher sections of the beach.
The shallow area is wide, and the seabed slopes gently, allowing for standing in the water quite far from the shore. This makes Zaglav suitable for families with small children and anyone who enjoys spending time in warm shallow water.
The sand is very light and can become quite hot under the strong sun in summer. Walking barefoot on the dry part of the beach can be uncomfortable, and a few meters to the water can feel quite urgent.
How to Get to Zaglav Beach?
The easiest way to reach it is via Milna.
You can drive or ride a scooter to Milna, leave your vehicle there, and then continue on foot along the coastal path to Zaglav. The official Vis Tourist Board estimates the walk from Milna takes approximately 15 minutes, although a faster pace can reduce this to about ten minutes.
The path is not particularly demanding and is not a hiking trail. However, it is mostly exposed to the sun, which is more significant than the distance itself. In July and August, it is much more pleasant to walk in the morning than in the hottest part of the day.
You can also reach Zaglav by boat, which is a common choice when exploring the coves along the southeastern coast of Vis.
Parking – Vehicle Remains in Milna
There is no parking or road access directly at Zaglav Beach.
You must leave your car in Milna and walk the last part of the way. This is important to consider if you are coming with small children, large coolers, umbrellas, and a lot of beach equipment.
On the other hand, the lack of a road behind the beach gives Zaglav a much more natural appearance. There are no cars immediately behind the towels or constant traffic along the beach.
During the peak season, it is advisable to arrive in Milna early, as parking spaces are also used by guests of Milna itself.
Is There Shade at Zaglav?
This is one of the important things to know before arriving: there is almost no natural shade on the main part of the beach for most of the day.
The official Vis Tourist Board states that shade can be found on the terrace of a small catering facility, while the beach itself begins to enter the shade only around 5 PM.
If you plan to stay all day, an umbrella or other sun protection is very useful. This is especially important with children, as the sand and the entire open area of the cove are very exposed to the sun during midday.
Later in the afternoon, Zaglav becomes a different story. The sun retreats behind the terrain, part of the beach enters the shade, and daily bathers begin to leave for Milna.
Is There Food and Drink Available at the Beach?
During the season, there is a small catering facility by the beach where you can sit in the shade, have a drink, or eat something. However, do not plan your visit as if you are going to an organized city beach with a range of different amenities.
There is no shop on the beach, and local sources indicate that you should not count on drinking water, showers, and the complete infrastructure found at larger bathing areas. Therefore, it is advisable to bring enough water, especially if you plan to stay for several hours.
The availability of seasonal amenities may change from year to year, so sand, sea, and the natural cove are what you can always count on here.
Is Zaglav a Good Beach for Children?
Yes – among the best on Vis.
The access is slightly less practical due to the walk from Milna, but once you reach the beach, Zaglav is very pleasant for small children. The sand is much easier to play in than the large pebbles of Vis, the entry into the sea is gentle, and the shallow area is large enough that children do not immediately find themselves in deep water.
The biggest drawback for families is not the sea but the lack of shade. If you are coming with children, early morning or late afternoon are more pleasant than midday.
When is Zaglav at its Best?
Zaglav faces east, so the sun rises very early. If you can arrive in the morning, the beach is particularly beautiful while the sand is still cooler, the sea calmer, and there is no peak daily crowd.
In July and August, do not expect a completely hidden empty beach. Zaglav is well-known and tends to be quite busy during the peak season, despite the lack of road access.
If you prefer more peace, June and September showcase its true character much better. Later in the afternoon is also an excellent choice as the beach begins to cool and enter the shade after 5 PM.
Zaglav or Milna?
Milna and Zaglav are very close and both have sandy bottoms, but they are not the same type of beach.
Milna is more practical if you want to leave your car almost by the sea and reach the swimming area without walking.
Zaglav is a more beautiful choice when a 10–15 minute walk is not a problem and you want a larger natural sandy beach without a road immediately behind it.
If you have enough time, it is best not to choose one over the other. You can leave your car in Milna, swim there, and then continue along the coastal path to Zaglav.
One of the Beaches Worth Walking to with Fewer Things
Zaglav is not difficult to access, but it requires just enough effort that not everyone arrives directly by car.
For that fifteen-minute walk, you get a wide natural sandy cove, very clear water, and a large shallow area, without parked cars just a few meters behind the beach.
If you arrive early, bring enough water, and address sun protection, Zaglav is one of those beaches on Vis where you can easily stay much longer than planned.
It is particularly worth highlighting for families and anyone looking for a true sandy beach on Vis, as there are not many, and Zaglav is among the best.
