Ruda Beach – A Quiet Cove between Rukavac and Srebrna on Vis

Ruda Beach is located in the cove of the same name on the southern side of the island of Vis, west of Rukavac and the well-known Srebrna Beach. Unlike Srebrna, which attracts many bathers during the summer, Ruda is much quieter and more secluded. The cove is divided into two arms, with a pebbly shore at the end of each. The Google Maps location for Ruda Beach marks a small natural pebble beach in the northern part of the cove.

There is no wide, developed bathing area, beach bar, or row of sun loungers. The main impression is created by the clear sea, bright stones, scrubland, and a few houses scattered around the cove. This character makes Ruda appealing to those who find Srebrna beautiful but too crowded during the peak season.

What is Ruda Beach Like?

The beach is small and natural, predominantly pebbly, with rocky sections along the sides. The water is very clear, and the bottom near the shore is a combination of pebbles and stones, so water shoes may be useful, especially when walking along the rocky edges of the cove.

Ruda is not one large open cove. It has two separate arms, each containing a pebbly area suitable for swimming. The western arm has several houses and small private moorings, while the northern arm is more natural and is where the small beach marked on Google Maps is located.

The space on the shore is limited, making Ruda a better choice for a few hours of quiet swimming rather than for a large group looking for ample space and developed facilities. The surrounding rocks and coastline are interesting for snorkeling, especially when the sea is calm.

How to Get to Ruda Beach?

Ruda is close to Rukavac in a straight line, but land access is not as straightforward as to Srebrna or Tepluša.

According to local sources, there is a poorer gravel or dirt road leading to the cove from Upper Rukavac, approximately one kilometer long. The road is narrow and uneven, and Vis Central describes it as access primarily recommended for off-road vehicles.

This is an important difference compared to nearby Srebrna. Access to Srebrna is relatively easy by car to the parking area, followed by a short walk, while reaching Ruda requires consideration of real island gravel and significantly less developed access.

If arriving in a regular or low vehicle, especially after winter or heavy rains, it is wise to assess the road conditions before proceeding to the cove. The condition of such gravel roads on Vis can change from season to season.

Parking at Ruda Beach

At Ruda, there is no conventional organized parking like that found at more popular beaches on Vis. Vehicles are left where the road conditions and available space allow, without blocking access to houses and the coast.

For this reason, Ruda is not the best choice for someone who wants to drive practically to their towel on the beach. If you are unsure about your vehicle or driving on poor gravel, it is more practical to walk part of the way.

Another very natural option is arriving by boat, as the cove is also known to sailors.

Is There Shade at the Beach?

There is Mediterranean vegetation, scrub, and some trees around the cove, but on the actual pebbly shore, one should not expect reliable deep shade throughout the day.

For a longer summer stay, it is advisable to bring your own sun protection. Ruda is a natural cove without facilities that would provide umbrellas or other shaded areas.

Are There Bars and Other Facilities?

At Ruda Beach, there are no beach bars, restaurants, showers, toilets, sun loungers, or sports equipment rentals. Available sources describe Ruda as a natural beach without tourist infrastructure.

Therefore, water and food should be brought along, especially if planning to stay for several hours.

The nearest more serious tourist offerings are in Rukavac, where there are accommodation and dining facilities. Ruda remains significantly quieter than Srebrna due to the lack of amenities.

Ruda and Former Fishing Cottages

Ruda has an interesting story that is not immediately visible.

Before the development of tourism, the cove served the residents of the villages Marinje Zemlje and Plisko Polje in the interior of Vis. They had fishing cottages by the sea, while their permanent homes were almost two kilometers inland.

The cove was connected to the villages by an old field road that the Geopark Viški Archipelago dates back to ancient times. It is believed that this route may have also been used for transporting stone from the Srebrna area to Roman estates in the interior of Vis.

Thus, several houses visible around Ruda were not created solely as modern holiday homes – the cove has long been part of the daily life of the island's interior inhabitants.

Unusual Rocks and Fossils in Ruda

If attention is paid to the rocks along the shore while swimming, Ruda hides another interesting feature. The Geopark Viški Archipelago lists it as an area with the highest concentration of fossils in the rocks in this part of Vis.

Numerous fossils of rudists, extinct shellfish that lived in the warm shallow sea of the present Adriatic tens of millions of years ago, can be found. Traces of other fossilized marine organisms can also be seen in the stones.

For a regular day at the beach, it is not necessary to delve deeper into geology, but these details explain why Ruda is included in Geostaza Vis – Rukavac of the UNESCO Global Geopark Viški Archipelago.

Ruda Cove for Sailors

Ruda is also interesting for boats. Nautical enthusiasts most often use the western arm of the cove, where there is relatively good shelter from northern winds. The seabed is a combination of pebbly and sandy areas.

However, the cove is on the southern coast of Vis, and the south wind creates uncomfortable waves and swell. Therefore, Ruda should not be considered a completely safe harbor in all weather conditions.

In the western part, there are small moorings next to private houses, but these are not public berths or a traditional marina.

Ruda or Srebrna?

Although they are very close, these two beaches offer quite different experiences.

Srebrna is larger, more well-known, and much easier to access. It has a large shore, a pine forest with natural shade, and a more organized approach from the parking area.

Ruda is smaller, quieter, and requires more effort to reach. There are no tourist facilities or organized parking, but this is precisely why it attracts significantly fewer visitors.

If a simple all-day outing with children is desired, Srebrna will be a more practical choice for most. If a small natural cove, fewer people, and not minding poorer gravel is sought, Ruda is much more interesting.

Ruda is a good example of a beach that still exists on Vis – located very close to a well-known tourist spot, but the last kilometer of poorer road is enough to create a completely different atmosphere. There is no need to come for amenities; one comes here precisely for peace, clear water, and the feeling of a small secluded cove on Vis.
