Bistro Kula Vis – Octopus, Fresh Fish, and Mediterranean Cuisine in a Hidden Square Behind the Waterfront

Bistro Kula is located almost at the waterfront of Vis, but its ambiance is quite different from restaurants with tables arranged along the coastal promenade. One must pass by the old stone tower and enter a small space behind it, where a peaceful terrace opens up between stone walls just a few steps from the city harbor.

The bistro opened in 2025 and is designed as a more contemporary interpretation of Dalmatian and Mediterranean cuisine. The menu relies on fresh fish, seafood, meat, vegetables, and seasonal ingredients, but the preparation is not traditional. Well-known island dishes and ingredients receive a slightly modern approach without excessive complication.

One of the dishes that best describes Kula is the slow-cooked octopus in sauce, served with polenta. Alongside it, there are monkfish, tuna, shrimp, shellfish, lamb, and steaks, making the selection diverse enough for a group where not everyone prefers fish.

Octopus with Polenta

Octopus is one of the more recognizable dishes at Bistro Kula.

Instead of the classic octopus salad or grilled octopus, it is prepared as a soft, long-cooked dish in a rich sauce, with polenta that absorbs the juices from the pot.

This is a substantial main dish and a good example of the direction of the cuisine – the ingredient is entirely Dalmatian, but the serving style belongs more to a modern bistro.

If visiting Kula for the first time, the octopus is one of the dishes worth trying from the current menu.

Monkfish, Tuna, and Daily Fish Offerings

The seafood section of the menu does not end with octopus.

Available are monkfish and tuna steak, as well as other fish depending on the season and availability. With such a menu, it makes little sense to insist on a predetermined type of fish – it is better to ask what the kitchen has that day and how it is prepared.

Monkfish is particularly suitable for this type of restaurant as its firm meat withstands grilling and stronger Mediterranean sides, while tuna requires shorter and more precise cooking.

Fish naturally pairs well with one of the local or Dalmatian white wines.

Shrimp, Prawns, and Pasta

Among the dishes available at Kula is creamy pasta with shrimp or prawns.

This is a richer seafood dish than simple pasta with sauce, featuring a sauce that clings to the pasta and emphasizes the sweetness of the shellfish.

Salads with shrimp are also available, so the seafood section of the menu is not limited to large main dishes.

Shellfish in Buzara Style

Buzara is one of the simplest and best ways to prepare shellfish in the Adriatic, and at Kula, mussels and other shellfish prepared in buzara style are offered.

Olive oil, garlic, wine, parsley, and the juices released by the shellfish during cooking create a sauce that pairs well with bread.

Such dishes nicely connect the more modern character of Kula with classic Dalmatian cuisine.

Steaks and Lamb

For those who do not want fish, there is a more substantial meat section on the menu.

Kula offers ribeye and other steaks, as well as lamb. The preparation is simpler and focused on the meat itself, accompanied by seasonal sides.

Lamb particularly complements the island character of the menu, while steak makes Kula a practical choice for a group combining seafood and meat dishes.

Peach, Prosciutto, and Goat Cheese

The seasonal approach is best seen in the smaller appetizers.

One of the more interesting combinations available in summer features peach, prosciutto, and goat cheese – the sweetness of ripe fruit, salty prosciutto, and creamy cheese.

Such plates are not large meals but work well as a starter for dinner or for sharing with wine.

The offerings may change depending on the season, which makes sense at Kula: summer fruits and vegetables are used when they are at their best, rather than keeping the same menu unchanged throughout the year.

Homemade Bread, Olives, and Sharing Plates

There are also plates with cured meats and cheeses, along with homemade bread and olives.

Particularly interesting are the local olives seasoned with Mediterranean herbs. Such a plate works well if one wants to start dinner with something simple before the main courses, accompanied by a bottle of wine.

Homemade bread is an important detail when ordering octopus in sauce or shellfish in buzara – these are dishes where it is almost expected to soak up the last bit of sauce with bread.

Homestyle Dessert

Kula does not require an extensive dessert menu.

Homemade cakes and simpler desserts appear, more in the style of finishing a family meal than a formal restaurant dessert with many components.

The offerings change, so it is best to ask what has been prepared that day.

Local Products and Seasonal Ingredients

Kula particularly emphasizes the use of fresh and seasonal ingredients.

This is evident through the fish, vegetables, fruits, olives, and other products that change throughout the season. Instead of a very long menu, the idea is to maintain a Mediterranean character and adapt to what is available.

For this reason, it is not necessary to expect that every listed dish will be on the menu throughout the summer. Part of Kula's appeal is precisely the daily and seasonal offerings.

A Small Square Hidden Behind the Tower

The ambiance is one of the main reasons Kula stands out.

The restaurant is just a few steps from the city waterfront and docks, but the tables are not set along the busiest promenade. They are located behind the historic tower, among old stone walls, in a small square that remains pleasantly sheltered in the evening.

This means that one can enjoy the convenience of central Vis without the constant passage of a large number of people right next to the table.

On warm evenings, the stone ambiance, shade, and breeze from the harbor create a very pleasant place for a longer dinner.

Close to the Waterfront, but Without Crowds at the Table

Kula is located on Ulica pod Kulom, practically just behind the coastal part of the harbor.

From the city docks, one only needs to cross from the waterfront to the tower, and from the ferry port, it is a short walk through the center to the restaurant.

The location is particularly convenient for sailors, as well as for guests staying anywhere in the center of Vis.

Reservation

Kula is not a large restaurant, and its small space is part of its charm.

During the main season, reservations are therefore recommended, especially for dinner and larger groups. If one wishes a table in the most pleasant part of the terrace, it is even better to arrange arrival in advance.

Parking

The bistro does not have a large private parking area next to the restaurant.

It is located in the narrowest center of Vis, so for guests staying in the city, it is best to arrive on foot. If coming by car from Komiža, Rukavac, or the interior of the island, it is more practical to leave the car in public parking in the wider area of the center and continue the last part on foot.
