Grandovac Beach Vis – Pebbles, Natural Shade, and Swimming Near Kuta
Grandovac Beach is located at the eastern entrance of the Vis harbor, in a small bay of the same name at the end of the Kuta area. It is far enough from the town to lose the feeling of an urban beach, yet close enough to reach on foot without organizing a special trip.
This is a pebble beach approximately 60 meters long, surrounded by pine trees and tamarisks that provide very good natural shade. The water is clear, the entry is easy, and the entire bay is significantly greener and quieter than the small urban beaches closer to the center of Vis.
Grandovac is therefore one of the best choices if you are staying in Kuta and want a proper beach that can still be reached on foot.
Pebble Shore Under Pines and Tamarisks
The main part of Grandovac consists of light pebbles, while rocky parts appear towards the edges of the bay.
The water gradually deepens, and the entry from the main shore is not difficult, which is why the official Tourist Board of Vis particularly recommends it for families with small children.
A significant advantage over many other beaches in Vis is the shade.
Pines and tamarisks grow right behind the shore and in some areas lean towards the coast, allowing visitors to find a shaded spot without needing to spend the entire day under their own umbrella.
In July and August, the best spots under the trees tend to fill up quickly, so for a more peaceful stay, it is best to arrive early.
One of the Best Beaches Near the Town of Vis for Children
Grandovac is a very good compromise between a wild island cove and an urban beach.
It is relatively easy to reach, there is no challenging descent down rocks, the main part of the beach is pebbly, and there is enough natural shade to stay with children for several hours.
There is no large sandy shallow like in Milna or Stončica, but the entry into the water is much easier than at rocky beaches.
For a family staying in the town of Vis who does not want to drive around the island every day, Grandovac is one of the more practical beaches for half a day or an entire afternoon.
How to Reach on Foot from Kuta?
Grandovac is the closest larger natural beach to Kuta, the eastern part of the town of Vis.
From Kuta, it takes approximately 15 minutes of easy walking, or about 1.5 kilometers, depending on where you start.
The path to the beach leads along the eastern side of the Vis harbor and gradually moves away from the houses and restaurants. As you approach Grandovac, the urban landscape is replaced by pines, rocks, and a more open view towards the entrance of the bay.
The walk is not demanding and is a much more pleasant option for most visitors than searching for parking.
From the very center of Vis, you should allow a bit more time, but it is still a beach that can be easily reached on foot.
Access by Car is Also Possible
You can also reach the Grandovac area by car or scooter.
This is practical if coming from another part of the island or if carrying more items for children.
However, Grandovac does not have the characteristics of a large organized beach with a spacious paved parking lot right next to the shore. Parking space in the vicinity is limited, especially during the peak season.
If you are already staying in Kuta or the center of Vis, walking is simpler.
View Towards Host Island
Grandovac lies at the eastern edge of the large St. George's Bay, a natural bay where the town of Vis is located.
From the beach, there is a view towards the entrance of the harbor and Host Island, which lies in front of the Vis bay.
Due to its location, there is a greater sense of open sea here than on beaches deep within the town harbor.
At the same time, boats approaching Vis can still be seen, especially ferries, sailboats, and other vessels passing towards the harbor.
This combination of a natural cove and active maritime traffic is one of the details that make Grandovac different from completely isolated beaches on the southern side of Vis.
Swimming Further from the Shore Requires Caution
The position at the entrance to the Vis harbor has practical implications.
If swimming only near the beach, there is no particular reason for concern. However, when swimming further towards the exit of the bay, it should be noted that there is a shipping lane nearby where vessels enter and exit Vis.
The same applies to snorkeling along the outer parts of the coast.
The underwater scenery near the rocks is interesting, the water is very clear, but it is advisable not to venture too far into the open part of the harbor.
Sunbathing Platform from the 1930s
Grandovac also has an interesting detail that can easily be overlooked.
Alongside the natural pebble shore, there is a constructed sunbathing platform built back in the 1930s.
This part of the coast is still used for lounging, sunbathing, and entering the water.
This shows that Grandovac is not just a newly discovered tourist beach. The area has been developed as a bathing spot long before the current tourism development in Vis.
The combination of the old platform, natural shore, and pine forest gives the beach an interesting blend of organized and completely natural space.
Small Bar Near the Beach
In close proximity to Grandovac, there is also a small seasonal bar, so during the summer, you can get a cold drink without returning to Kuta.
Do not expect a large beach club, restaurant, or a wide range of catering facilities.
Grandovac remains primarily a natural beach.
If a more substantial meal is desired, there are many more options in Kuta and the town of Vis, which can be easily returned to on foot after swimming.
The Czech Villa is Nearby
Grandovac is also located not far from the famous Czech Villa, a former tourist and holiday complex in this part of the Vis coast.
The villa and the surrounding area went through very different phases during the 20th century, including a period when the area was used by the military.
The Czech Villa is not part of Grandovac beach itself, but it is an important landmark and an interesting part of the history of the eastern coast of the Vis harbor.
If you continue walking from Kuta towards Grandovac, this entire part of the coast shows a completely different side of the town compared to the palaces and stone streets of the historic center.
Grandovac or Vagan?
If you are staying in Kuta, both beaches are easily accessible but offer different experiences.
Vagan is a small urban beach practically within Kuta. It is excellent for a quick morning or evening swim without special planning.
Grandovac requires a bit more walking, but in return offers a larger pebble shore, much more natural shade, and the feeling of a true cove away from the city.
If you just want to spend half an hour in the sea before dinner, Vagan is more practical.
If you want to bring a towel, find shade under the pines, and spend several hours at the beach, Grandovac is a much better choice.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
Grandovac is particularly pleasant in the morning, when the beach is quieter and you can still choose a spot in the shade.
During July and August, late morning and early afternoon see more bathers, especially since the beach is popular among guests from Kuta and families.
Later in the afternoon, it becomes very pleasant again, especially for guests who do not want to spend the hottest part of the day at the beach.
June and September may be the best months for Grandovac – the water is comfortable, the shade from the pines and tamarisks remains a significant advantage, and the entire bay has a much calmer character than at the peak of the season.
A Beach that Connects the City and Nature Well
The greatest value of Grandovac is not in being the most dramatic beach in Vis.
For that, there are Stiniva, Srebrna, and numerous hidden coves on the island.
Grandovac is interesting because it provides a sense of a natural beach while being practically on the edge of the town of Vis.
In about fifteen minutes from Kuta, one can transition from stone streets and restaurants to a small pebble cove under the pines, swim in clear waters, and spend several hours in the shade.
After that, the same path can be taken back to the town for dinner without a car and without all-day logistics.
For guests staying in Vis, especially in Kuta, Grandovac is therefore one of the best combinations of easy access, natural shade, and true island bathing close to the town.
