The garden of Kaliopa is not an ordinary terrace added to the restaurant. The restaurant is situated in the garden of a historic Gothic-Renaissance palace from the 16th century, and this space makes Kaliopa one of the most visually recognizable restaurants in Vis.
Tall palms, pines, and other Mediterranean vegetation create a natural shelter from the surrounding town. Upon entering through the garden gates, the waterfront and traffic remain behind the walls, and the space feels almost separate from the rest of Vis.
In the evening, when the garden is illuminated and the daytime heat subsides, the ambiance is particularly pleasant. Due to the size of the garden, tables are not crowded together, which is a rarity among restaurants in the old town center.
A Good Place for a Special Dinner
Kaliopa is not a place I would primarily recommend for a quick and inexpensive meal after the beach.
It makes more sense to come here when one wants to spend the entire evening at the table, order good fish or lobster, open a bottle of wine, and not rush. The ambiance, serving style, and fresh fish offerings categorize it among restaurants chosen for something more special.
This is also reflected in the prices. Especially for fresh fish, shrimp, and lobster, it is advisable to check the price and weight before ordering, as is customary in more serious fish restaurants along the Adriatic.
Reservation
During the summer, reservations are recommended, especially if one wishes to dine in the most pleasant part of the garden or is coming in a larger group.
Kaliopa has long been a well-known spot among guests arriving by boat in Vis, and due to its location between Luka and Kuta, it is easily accessible to sailors from both parts of the city harbor.
For special occasions and larger groups, it is best to arrange a table in advance.
How to Get There
Restaurant Villa Kaliopa is located between the main part of the city of Vis and Kuta, just a few steps from the coastal promenade.
From the ferry terminal area, it can be reached on foot with a pleasant walk along the sea, and it is even closer from Kuta. If already staying in the city, a car is not necessary for going to dinner.
The location is very practical for sailors – from the mooring in Kuta and the berths in Luka, the restaurant is easily accessible on foot.
Parking
The restaurant does not have a large private parking area next to the garden.
There are public parking spaces in the immediate and wider area, including a larger parking lot near the school, but during the main season, it is not advisable to rely on being able to park immediately next to the restaurant.
