The Church of Our Lady of the Sea, or Navy Church, was built on the St. Polycarp hill in Pula at the end of the 19th century. More specifically, construction began in 1891, and the Church was completed in 1898. The construction style is a mixture of neo-Byzantineism and neo-Romanticism. The church is made of alternating rows of white Istrian stone from Brijuni and marble stoneextracted in the quarries of Oprtalj and Brtonigla. The rich exterior decoration is accompanied by the equally rich decoration of the church interior. Next to the church is a bell tower 28 meters high. Emperor Francis Joseph was also present at the inauguration ceremony.
