On June 23, 1977, an Agreement on friendly co-operation was signed in Rijeka between Rijeka and Kawasaki in Japan.A few years later, in the name of this friendship, the Japanese city also presented us with figures of boys and girls with a bird, which were erected on a fountain in Jelacic Square, symbolizing our friendship. At the time of setting up the fountain in 1988, the square was called Belgrade Square, and after the independence of Croatia it was named after the former Croatian Ban and also the Governor of Rijeka, Josip Jelacic.
