The sculptor Ante Jurkic's monument was cast in bronze in the foundry of the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts. It introduces John Paul II. during the time of prayer before the miraculous image of Our Lady of Trsatska during his visit to that shrine on June 8, 2003. This was his third pastoral visit to Croatia, when he was in Rijeka for five days. The statue weighs about one ton and is 2.8 meters high, along with the pedestal. Donors of the monument are the Croatian Government, the County of Primorje-Gorski kotar, the City of Rijeka and the Croatian National Tourist Board.
