The top of the hill in Podmurvice is dominated by the elegant silhouette of the Salesian Church of Mary the Helper. The construction of the church of Mary the Helper was encouraged by the Salesians, a church order exclusively focused on the upbringing and welfare of male youth. These monks came to Rijeka on January 6, 1918, at the end of the First World War.The church was built in 1934. It was designed by architect Eneo Ronci of Verona, in a Lombardian style characterized by “simplicity and attention to naturalistic details, and a Romanesque revival. The construction of the church was assisted by Antun Martinolli, who donated the marble altar. The church of Mary the Helper is a three nave church.
