The Clarises are a female branch of the Franciscan Order also called the Second Order of St. Frane. Nuns live in a cloister. They opened a monastery in Split in 1308 and have been around ever since. Their present monastery was erected in 1883, and before that they lived in two monasteries in the old town.Next to the monastery there is a church dedicated to St. Clare. It was built in 1884. The church was built on the site of the chapel of Sv. Joseph mentioned in documents from the 17th century. Since the Clarises have been in Split since 1308, their church and monastery abound in many valuable works of art, of which the first-class significance is the painted Romanesque Crucifix from the 13th century.
