Poganica Beach – A Hidden Cove on the Southern Coast of Šolta
Poganica Beach is located in a small cove of the same name on the southern side of Šolta, southwest of the more well-known Šešula cove. It is one of those places that is not visited by chance: there are no settlements, restaurants, or paved promenades, just a small pebble beach, one house, and nature that has remained almost entirely untouched by tourism development.
The beach is small and covered with pebbles and stones, while rocky cliffs dominate the edges of the cove. The easiest entry into the sea is through the central part of the beach, but water shoes are advisable due to the rocky bottom, slippery stones, and potential sea urchins.
The water is very clear in calm weather, and the cove is suitable for swimming and snorkeling close to the shore. There is some natural shade from the surrounding vegetation, but not enough for all bathers, so it is advisable to bring an umbrella for longer stays.
There are no showers, changing cabins, public toilets, sun loungers, lifeguards, or food services at the beach. Visitors should bring enough water, food, sun protection, and anything else they may need. There are no shops or other places to stock up during the day in the cove.
How to Reach Poganica
The cove can be accessed from the areas of Maslinica and Šešula via local and unpaved roads through the uninhabited part of the island. The road is uneven, narrow in places, and not suitable for vehicles with very low clearance.
It is not possible to drive directly to the beach. Vehicles must be left at the end of the passable part of the road, followed by approximately a ten-minute walk along a path through dense Mediterranean vegetation.
The path is not maintained as a typical tourist walkway. In some sections, it is narrow, rocky, and uneven, so closed shoes or sturdy sandals are recommended. The return should be planned while there is still enough daylight, as the path is not illuminated.
There is no large organized parking area at the end of the unpaved road. Vehicles should be parked in a way that does not obstruct passage, block a field road, or impede access to private land. After rain, the condition of the unpaved road and path may be significantly worse.
Poganica can also be reached by boat. The cove is small, so boaters should be cautious of swimmers, depth, rocks, and weather forecasts. While it may provide some shelter during a strong southeast wind, it does not guarantee safety in all wind directions.
Important Warning – Poganica Underwater Cave
Near the shore, there is an entrance to the underwater cave Poganica. Swimmers and recreational divers should not attempt to explore it.
Several divers have died in the cave, including experienced divers and members of a police diving team involved in rescue operations. The interior is deep, narrow, and branched, and silt can be stirred up from the bottom, reducing visibility to zero in moments.
Entering the cave is not comparable to regular diving along the coast. Cave diving requires special training, multiple air sources, safety lines, appropriate lighting, knowledge of the area, and organized surface support.
Regardless of diving experience, entering the Poganica cave should not be attempted alone or out of curiosity. Recreational divers and swimmers are safest when keeping their distance from the entrance and only diving in open waters along the coast.
Diving on a breath-hold towards the cave entrance is also not advisable. Depth, darkness, and seemingly simple passage can lead a person to go further than they can safely return.
Swimming and Safety
Poganica is a completely natural beach without a lifeguard. Children should be constantly supervised, especially near the rocks and in areas where the depth increases rapidly.
Conditions on the southern coast can change quickly. When a southeast wind or another wind from the open sea blows, waves can enter the cove, making return by small boat more uncomfortable and dangerous.
Before visiting, it is important to check not only the temperature and the possibility of rain but also the direction and strength of the wind. The most pleasant time to arrive is early in the morning when the sea is usually calmer and there is still enough space on the small beach.
The beach is not accessible for people with reduced mobility or strollers. The final walking access involves uneven terrain, and there are no ramps or organized access to the water at the shore.
Poganica is best suited for those who enjoy secluded coves, natural beaches, and tranquility without additional amenities. A good visit requires appropriate footwear, sufficient water, a checked weather forecast, and awareness that you are far from quick access to assistance.
When the sea is calm, Poganica is a beautiful place for swimming, resting, and snorkeling along the open coast. However, the underwater cave should be left undisturbed – its history clearly shows that it is an extremely dangerous area, not a tourist attraction for independent exploration.
