Uvala Grabova – A Quiet Pebble Beach on the Southern Coast of Šolta
Uvala Grabova is located on the southern side of Šolta, beneath the area of Gornje Selo, between Stračinska and Senjska. It is deeply set into the land, surrounded by steep green slopes and almost completely separated from settlements and the main island roads.
At the end of the cove, there is a small natural beach with pebbles and stones. Along the coast, there are a few houses and boats, but Grabova does not have a developed tourist resort. There are no piers, restaurants, shops, or organized bathing areas, making the atmosphere much calmer even during the summer compared to more popular spots on Šolta.
Grabova is most beautiful in the morning, when the sea is calm and the sun begins to illuminate the interior of the cove. The water is very clear, and due to the light rocky bottom, it takes on green and turquoise hues.
Beach and Entry into the Sea
The main part of the beach consists of pebbles, cobbles, and stones. The easiest entry into the sea is through the middle of the beach, while the edges are dominated by rocks and larger stones.
The depth increases gradually near the shore, but further into the cove, the sea quickly deepens. Water shoes are useful due to the stones, potential sea urchins, and slippery rocks.
Grabova is a good place for swimming and snorkeling. Along the sides of the cove, one can observe the rocky seabed and small fish, but care should be taken regarding boats and anchored vessels.
The beach is not large, so a few families or groups from boats can occupy a significant portion of the space. It is quietest early in the morning or outside of July and August.
Shade and Facilities
Along the edges of the beach and under the pines, there is some natural shade, but it is not advisable to rely on finding a free shaded spot throughout the day. The central part of the beach is mostly exposed to the sun.
There are no facilities on the beach, including:
- Showers and changing cabins
- Public toilets
- Lifeguards
- Sun loungers and umbrellas
- Beach bars or restaurants
- Shops and drinking water
Visitors should bring enough water, food, sun protection, and a bag for their waste. The cove is far from places where supplies can be quickly obtained.
How to Reach Uvala Grabova
Access to Grabova by land is via a rural, field, and unpaved road from the interior of the island. The access is linked to the area of Gornje Selo, but the final road to the coast is not maintained as a standard road to the beach.
The unpaved road can be narrow, uneven, and overgrown at the edges. Its condition may change after rain or construction and agricultural work, so it is advisable not to drive a low-clearance vehicle without prior inspection.
The most reasonable option is to leave the vehicle in a safe and permitted area before the worst part of the road and then continue on foot. The walking distance will depend on the road condition and where the vehicle can be parked and turned around normally.
Sturdy shoes or sandals are better for walking than flip-flops. The path is not illuminated, there are no water sources, and not much shade, so it is advisable to start early in the summer and return before dark.
Mobile navigation can help, but some branches lead to private parcels or olive groves. It is important to stick to the existing passable path and not to cross private land.
Parking
There is no organized public parking near the beach. The space next to the houses and at the end of the road is very limited, and part of the area belongs to private properties.
Vehicles should not be left in front of houses, at the entrance to olive groves, in turning areas, or in the middle of the narrow unpaved road. It is particularly inadvisable to drive down with larger vans, campers, or vehicles with trailers, as returning and passing can be very difficult.
Grabova is therefore more practical for guests arriving on foot, with a 4x4 vehicle with good knowledge of the road, or by boat.
Arrival by Boat
The majority of visitors get to know Grabova from the sea. The deep cove appears sheltered, and during calm weather, it attracts smaller boats, sailboats, and excursionists.
There are no marinas, organized transit berths, connections for electricity and water, or nautical services in the cove. Anchoring is at one's own risk, with checks on depth, seabed type, and weather forecasts.
Boats should not be brought too close to the pebble beach or anchored in areas where people are swimming. When approaching, it is important to drive very slowly as swimmers are not always easily visible from the sea.
Grabova is open to the south, so during south winds and waves from the open sea, it is not a safe place for calm anchoring or overnight stays. The fact that the cove is deep does not mean it is protected from all winds.
Swimming with Children
The beach may be suitable for families with older children who are accustomed to natural coves and rocky shores. The sea along the beach generally allows for easy entry, but there are no lifeguards, designated swimming areas, or any additional facilities.
Small children should be under constant supervision, especially due to the stones, depth, boats, and potential moorings in the sea.
Land access is not practical for strollers. Parents should also consider that there are no toilets, water, or places to buy food in the cove.
The beach is not adapted for persons with reduced mobility as access involves unpaved and uneven terrain, and there is no ramp leading to the sea.
Wind and Best Time to Visit
Before heading to Grabova, it is always advisable to check the wind direction. The southern coast of Šolta is exposed to southern winds and waves from the open sea, so the calm cove can change completely in a short time.
The most pleasant months for land access are June and September, when it is not too hot for walking. In July and August, it is best to start early in the morning, bring enough water, and avoid returning during the hottest part of the day.
After strong southern winds, seaweed, branches, and other debris may wash up on the shore. Grabova is not a city beach that is cleaned daily, so its appearance largely depends on the weather and sea conditions.
Who Will Enjoy Grabova
Grabova is a good choice for guests who enjoy hidden coves, natural pebble beaches, and swimming without music and tourist facilities. Getting there requires more preparation than visiting roadside beaches, but this is precisely why there are usually fewer people here.
I would not recommend it to visitors who need easy access by car, secure parking, a restaurant, showers, or a well-maintained beach for small children.
When the sea is calm and there are not many boats in the cove, Grabova is one of those places where one can truly feel the wild southern coast of Šolta – a few houses, a small pebble beach, pines, and the sea without any urban noise.
