Vela Travna – Secluded Pebble Beach on the Southern Coast of Šolta

Vela Travna Cove, also known as Beach Travna on Google Maps, is located on the southeastern side of Šolta, between Stračinska and Livka. It is a deep and narrow cove surrounded by steep rocky slopes, pine trees, and dense Mediterranean vegetation.

There are no settlements, piers, or tourist crowds here. At the end of the cove, there is a small natural beach, with only a few houses along the coast and a place for boat mooring. Vela Travna is most suitable for those seeking a quiet cove and are prepared to bring everything they need for their stay.

When the sea is calm, the water is very clear and takes on a turquoise color, especially above the light rocky bottom near the beach. We find it most beautiful early in the morning, before the sun fully warms the slopes and before the arrival of boats.

Beach and Sea Access

The beach at the end of the cove consists of pebbles, cobblestones, and larger rocks. The easiest access to the sea is through the middle of the beach, while the edges are dominated by rocks and a rougher rocky bottom.

The bottom initially slopes gradually, but the sea deepens quickly towards the middle of the cove. Water shoes are advisable due to the rocks, potential sea urchins, and slippery stones.

Vela Travna is good for swimming and snorkeling. Along the side rocks, one can see the natural seabed and smaller fish, but swimmers should be cautious of boats entering the cove or anchoring away from the beach.

The beach itself is not large. A few families or crews from boats can occupy most of the space, so during July and August, it is best to arrive early.

Natural Shade and Facilities

Some natural shade can be found along the edges of the beach and under the surrounding vegetation, but the shade moves throughout the day. The main part of the beach is mostly exposed to the sun.

There are no facilities in Vela Travna:

  • beach bar or restaurant
  • shop or drinking water
  • showers or changing cabins
  • public toilet
  • sun loungers or umbrellas
  • lifeguard

It is necessary to bring enough water, food, sun protection, and a bag for personal waste. Do not expect to purchase anything nearby.

How to Reach Vela Travna

Land access is from the direction of Gornje Selo via unpaved and field roads towards the southern coast. The road passes through uninhabited areas, olive groves, maquis, and rocky terrain.

The final approach is not paved like a normal road to the beach. The unpaved road can be narrow, rocky, overgrown, and washed out after heavy rain, so a regular car with low clearance should not be driven down without prior inspection.

It is safest to leave the car at a permitted widening before the worse part of the road and continue on foot. The duration of the walk depends on the condition of the unpaved road and where the vehicle can be safely parked and turned around.

For the journey, I recommend wearing sneakers or sturdy sandals. Flip-flops are not a good choice for walking on uneven, rocky paths, especially when carrying water, an umbrella, and other equipment.

There are no water sources, lighting, or much shade along the way. In the summer months, it is advisable to start early in the morning and allow enough time for the return before dark.

Navigation may show the basic direction, but some turns lead to private olive groves and houses. Do not cross private parcels or open closed passages.

Parking

There is no organized public parking near the beach. The end of the road and the area near the few houses are very limited, and part of the area belongs to property owners.

Do not leave the car in the middle of the road, in front of an olive grove entrance, next to a private house, or in a place needed for turning the vehicle.

Larger vans, campers, and cars with trailers are not practical for descending towards the cove. Vela Travna is much easier to visit by boat or on foot after leaving the car further from the coast.

Arrival by Boat and Mooring

Vela Travna is a deep cove and appears very sheltered from the sea, but it is completely open to the south. In calm weather, it is suitable for day anchoring and swimming, but it is not advisable to stay when a southern wind or waves from the open sea are expected.

There is no marina, concessioned buoy, electricity or water connections, or safe transit moorings in the cove. Mooring is at your own risk, with checks on depth, type of bottom, and weather forecasts.

Boats should not approach too close to the beach or the area where people are swimming. Entering the cove should be done slowly as swimmers may be quite far from the small beach.

Due to its openness to the south, Vela Travna is more suitable for a short daytime stop than for safe overnight stays without careful monitoring of the weather.

Swimming with Children

The pebbly entrance may be suitable for children when the sea is calm, but Vela Travna is not an organized family beach. There are no lifeguards, toilets, showers, playgrounds, or safe shade throughout the day.

Children should be constantly supervised due to the rocks, depth, potential sea urchins, and boats entering the cove.

Land access is not practical for strollers. The cove is also not easily accessible for persons with reduced mobility as the final road leads over unpaved and uneven terrain.

Wind and Best Time to Visit

The most important factor is to check if the southern wind is blowing. When waves come from the open sea, the beach becomes less pleasant, the rocks slippery, and anchoring unsafe.

The best months for land access are June and September when temperatures are more comfortable for walking. In July and August, it is advisable to start early in the morning and avoid returning during the hottest part of the day.

After strong southern winds, seaweed, branches, and other natural materials may wash ashore. Since the beach is not cleaned daily like urban beaches, its appearance depends on the weather and sea conditions.

Who Will Enjoy Vela Travna

Vela Travna is a good choice for visitors who enjoy wild coves, small natural beaches, snorkeling, and tranquility without tourist facilities.

It is not a good choice for those seeking easy access by regular car, organized parking, restaurants, sun loungers, or a beach suitable for strollers.

Visiting requires a bit more planning, but when the sea is calm, Vela Travna offers what makes exploring the southern coast of Šolta worthwhile: clear water, silence, a few meters of pebbles, and a feeling of being far away from everything, even though you are still only a few kilometers from Gornje Selo.
