BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Podgora is a small village in Split-Dalmatia County, on the Makarska Riviera. Podgora has a population of 1,500, which has turned its economy to tourism. It is located 65 kilometers south of Split and 135 kilometers north of Dubrovnik. You can reach Podgora by taking the Adriatic Highway from Split or Dubrovnik, where there are airports, or by taking the A1 highway to Šestanovac, the Makarska exit, and you are in Podgora in about ten minutes. Podgora also has its own small port for boats.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
Podgora was first mentioned in 1571 as one of the places under the protection of Venice after the Turkish defeat in the Battle of Lepanto. In the cemetery next to the church of St. Tekla, tombstones from that era can still be seen. Some archaeological artifacts testify to the existence of settlements in this area since prehistoric times and antiquity, probably due to its favorable location, mild climate and beautiful nature. The name itself is a result of its location next to the slopes of Biokovo. During the time of the Turks, this place bore the title Kaštel (Castello) because it was one of the strategic defensive points, for which reason numerous towers were built in the place. The place is divided into Gornja Podgora and Donja Podgora. The development of tourism began with the construction of Donja Podgora. The monument Galebova krila was erected on the slopes of Biokovo, and nearby is the prehistoric site of Troja gomile. In Gornja Podgora there are also the remains of the Rošćić tower. The place cherishes a long Christian tradition, as evidenced by numerous churches and chapels such as St. Rok, All Saints, St. Tekle, the chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the chapel-lighthouse Ijak and numerous others.
