BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION

Podstrana is a municipality in the Split-Dalmatia County. It declared its independence in 1993 on the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua, the patron saint of Podstrana. There are about ten settlements in the Podstrana area. It is separated from Split by the lower reaches and mouth of the Žrnovmica River, it borders the municipality of Dugi Rat to the southeast, the Perun hill to the northeast, and the coast stretches for 6 kilometers to the southwest. The municipality has a population of 9,129, and is only 8 kilometers from Split, so it has become a suburb of Split with regular bus connections.

CULTURE; HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS

The foundations of the settlement were laid by Greek settlers. Later, the Roman settlement of Pituntium existed in the area until the 7th century. The remains of archaeological excavations tell of the turbulent past of this region. These include the ruins of a Roman building in the Polače area, the church of St. George on Perun, decorated flat tombstones in the cemetery near the church of Our Lady of Sita, medieval graves near the church of St. Martin, and numerous written documents. The Order of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception operates in Podstrana. Also of interest are the Cindro Palace, Babina stina, and the old cemetery.

BEACHES

Podstrana, with its 6 kilometers of coastline, is rich in pebble beaches with rich Mediterranean vegetation and catering facilities. These are the beaches along Grljevac, Mutogras and Podstrana itself, and due to their exceptional quality and cleanliness they have been awarded the white flag.

Nightlife is offered in nearby Split, and the Podstrana Cultural Summer during July and August offers various interesting events and cultural entertainment.

Attractive windsurfing, diving, water sports, renting kayaks, jet-skis, boats with which you can go to nearby islands, mini football, basketball, tennis are all possibilities if you are a fan of an active holiday. WHAT TO DO AND EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES

The proximity to Split, Omiš, Solin and Trogir is a great advantage, as well as the islands of Brač, Hvar or Šolta. You can also take day trips to Makarska, Dubrovnik, Mostar and Međugorje, the Biokovo Nature Park, the Plitvice Lakes and Krka National Parks. The possibilities are truly numerous.
