Kaštel Gligo – A Fortified Castle Guarding the Entrance to Bobovišća for Centuries
Kaštel Gligo is one of the most significant historical buildings in Bobovišća na Moru and an essential site for visitors interested in the history and architecture of the island of Brač. Located on the sheltered side of the bay, right by the sea, this impressive fortified complex has dominated the view of the harbor for centuries and bears witness to the turbulent past of Brač's settlements. It is first mentioned in the late 16th century when it served to defend the harbor and access to the island's interior during a period of increased pirate activity in the Adriatic.
The castle belonged to the esteemed Marinčević-Gligo family, whose members were sailors, merchants, lawyers, and prominent citizens of Brač. Over the centuries, the complex has been expanded and adapted to new needs, with its current appearance largely shaped during the 18th and 19th centuries.
What particularly attracts visitors today is its unique architecture. The castle is built around a large courtyard facing the sea, which is protected on the outside by high defensive walls. Remnants of a stone walkway on arches, gun ports embedded in the walls, and parts of the oldest defensive structure can still be seen, attesting to its former military function.
Although the interior of the castle is not open for regular tourist visits, the exterior can be well observed during a walk along the waterfront of Bobovišća na Moru. The best view of the defensive walls, stone facades, and the characteristic arrangement of buildings that form this historical complex is from the shore. Photographers will find the view of the castle from the center of the bay particularly interesting, as it highlights its seaside location and harmony with the traditional architecture of the area.
Visitors can notice numerous details during their visit that reveal the defensive purpose of the building – stone gun ports, massive walls, and former guard positions. It is also one of the best examples of fortified residential architecture on Brač, where the defensive function and daily life were integrated within the same complex.
Today, Kaštel Gligo is a protected cultural heritage site of the Republic of Croatia and one of the most important monuments of the historical heritage of Bobovišća. Combined with a walk along the waterfront, a visit to Nazor's house, and exploring the old town core, it offers an excellent insight into the rich past of one of the most picturesque settlements on the western coast of Brač.
