Kaštel Gligo – The Fortified Castle Guarding the Entrance to Bobovišća for Centuries

Kaštel Gligo is one of the most significant historical buildings in Bobovišća na Moru and a must-see for visitors interested in the history and architecture of Brač Island. Situated on the sheltered side of the bay, right by the sea, this impressive fortified complex has dominated the view of the harbour for centuries and bears witness to the turbulent past of Brač's settlements. It is first mentioned in the late 16th century, when it served to defend the harbour and access to the island's interior during a period of increased piracy in the Adriatic.

The castle belonged to the esteemed Marinčević-Gligo family, whose members were sailors, merchants, lawyers, and prominent citizens of Brač. Over the centuries, the complex has been expanded and adapted to meet new needs, with much of its current appearance shaped during the 18th and 19th centuries.

What particularly attracts visitors today is its unique architecture. The castle is built around a large courtyard facing the sea, which is protected on the outside by high defensive walls. Remnants of stone walkways on arches, gun ports embedded in the walls, and parts of the oldest defensive structure can still be seen, all of which testify to its former military function.

Although the interior of the castle is not open for regular tourist visits, the exterior can be well appreciated during a stroll along the waterfront of Bobovišća na Moru. The best views of the defensive walls, stone facades, and the characteristic layout of the buildings that form this historical ensemble can be enjoyed from the shore. Photographers will find the view of the castle from the centre of the bay particularly interesting, as it highlights its seaside location and harmony with the traditional architecture of the area.

During their visit, guests can observe numerous details that reveal the defensive purpose of the building – stone gun ports, massive walls, and former guard positions. It is also one of the finest examples of fortified residential architecture on Brač, where defensive function and everyday life were intertwined within the same complex.

Today, Kaštel Gligo is a protected cultural heritage site of the Republic of Croatia and one of the most important monuments of historical heritage in Bobovišća. Combined with a walk along the waterfront, a visit to Nazor's House, and exploring the old core of the village, it offers an excellent insight into the rich past of one of the most picturesque settlements on the western coast of Brač.
