Church of St. John and Paul and Its Bell Tower – A Symbol of Ložišća on Brač

The Church of St. John and Paul is the most important sacred building in Ložišća and one of the most recognizable landmarks on the island of Brač. Located in the center of the village, it dominates the visual landscape of this picturesque settlement, while its impressive bell tower represents one of the finest achievements of sacred architecture in Dalmatia.

The current parish church was built in the 19th century on the site of an older church and is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. Paul. The interior features several valuable altars, artworks, and liturgical items that testify to the long religious tradition of Ložišća. The church continues to play an important role in the life of the local community and serves as a center for religious celebrations and holidays.

Visitors are particularly drawn to the monumental bell tower, which stands approximately 45 meters tall. It was constructed in the late 19th century according to the designs of the renowned Brač sculptor and builder Ivan Rendić, one of the most significant Croatian artists of that time. Rendić personally designed much of the decorative elements, making the bell tower one of his most important architectural works.

Made of white Brač stone, the bell tower is distinguished by its richly decorated details, elegant proportions, and recognizable dome that is visible from a great distance. Many consider it the most beautiful bell tower on the island of Brač, and due to its location, it has become a symbol of Ložišća and one of the most photographed buildings in the western part of the island.

As visitors stroll through the stone streets of the village, they can closely observe numerous stone decorations, reliefs, and sculptural details that adorn the bell tower. It is particularly impressive when approaching Ložišća from the direction of Milna, as its elegant silhouette suddenly appears above the stone houses.

The Church of St. John and Paul and its bell tower are not only important religious structures but also among the most valuable cultural assets of Brač. A visit to Ložišća is hard to imagine without stopping at this site, which best represents the rich architectural tradition of the island and the skill of Brač stone masons.
