The Church of St John and St Paul and its Bell Tower – a Symbol of Ložišća on Brač
The Church of St John and St Paul is the most significant religious building in Ložišća and one of the most recognisable landmarks on the island of Brač. Located in the heart of the village, it dominates the view of this picturesque settlement, while its impressive bell tower is regarded as one of the finest achievements of sacred architecture in Dalmatia.
The current parish church was constructed in the 19th century on the site of an older church and is dedicated to St John the Baptist and St Paul. The interior features several valuable altars, artworks, and liturgical items that reflect the long-standing religious tradition of Ložišća. The church continues to play an important role in the life of the local community, serving as a centre for religious celebrations and festivals.
However, it is the monumental bell tower, standing approximately 45 metres tall, that captures the most attention from visitors. Built at the end of the 19th century based on designs by the renowned Brač sculptor and builder Ivan Rendić, one of the most significant Croatian artists of that era, the tower showcases many of Rendić's own decorative elements, making it one of his most important architectural works.
Crafted from white Brač stone, the bell tower is distinguished by its richly adorned details, elegant proportions, and a distinctive dome that is visible from a considerable distance. Many consider it the most beautiful bell tower on Brač, and due to its prominent position, it has become a symbol of Ložišća and one of the most photographed buildings in the western part of the island.
As visitors stroll through the village's stone streets, they can closely observe the numerous stone decorations, reliefs, and sculptural details that embellish the bell tower. It is particularly striking when approaching Ložišća from the direction of Milna, where its elegant silhouette suddenly emerges above the stone houses.
