Koloč Rock on Brač | Unusual Stone Formation in the Center of the Island

Koloč Rock is located in the central part of Brač, in a rocky area between Nerežišća and the southern side of the island, far from coastal towns and tourist routes. From a distance, it appears completely different from the surrounding terrain — a large rounded rock rises from the flatter stony ground, resembling a giant stone loaf or cake placed on top of a hill. Due to this unusual shape, locals refer to the site as Koloč.

The name comes from an old Dalmatian word for round bread or festive cake, as the rock looks like a massive stone flatbread leaning against a narrow stone pillar from certain angles. The upper part of the rock is wide and rounded, while the lower part is narrower, giving the entire formation an almost surreal appearance, especially when viewed from a distance across the bare Brač stone fields.

Koloč was formed through the natural erosion of limestone over thousands of years. Wind, rain, and temperature changes gradually shaped the rock until it reached its current form, which is distinctly different from the surrounding rocks and hills. This is why the site attracts hikers, photographers, and those exploring lesser-known parts of Brač.

There is no conventional tourist road leading to the rock. Most often, access is via dirt roads from the direction of Nerežišća or old shepherd paths through the island's interior. The final part of the journey is on foot over rocky terrain and dry stone walls. As there are no houses, restaurants, or shade in the vicinity, the entire area feels very isolated and completely different from the coastal part of Brač.

From the area around Koloč, the view opens up to a large part of the island's interior, and on clear days, the southern coast of Brač, the Hvar Channel, and higher island ridges can be seen. The site is particularly interesting in the evening when the sun highlights the relief of the rock and the white Brač stone around it.

Koloč is not a developed tourist attraction nor a place with signs and infrastructure. This makes the visit feel more like an exploration of a hidden part of the island rather than a typical outing. During the summer, it is necessary to bring enough water as there are no facilities or natural shade in the area.

Among those who enjoy hiking and exploring Brač, Koloč has been known for years as one of the most unusual natural formations on the island, precisely because of the shape from which it derives its name and the landscape around it that appears almost completely bare.
