Stijena Koloč on Brač | Unusual Rock Formation in the Heart of the Island

Stijena Koloč is situated in the central part of Brač, in a rocky area between Nerežišća and the southern side of the island, far from coastal towns and tourist routes. From a distance, it appears entirely different from the surrounding terrain — a large rounded rock rises from the flatter stony ground, resembling a giant stone loaf or cake placed atop a hill. This unusual shape has led locals to refer to the site as Koloč.

The name derives from an old Dalmatian word for round bread or ceremonial cake, as the rock, from certain angles, resembles a massive stone flatbread leaning against a narrow stone pillar. The upper part of the rock is broad and rounded, while the lower section is narrower, giving the entire formation an almost surreal appearance, particularly when viewed from afar across the barren Brač landscape.

Koloč was formed through the natural erosion of limestone over thousands of years. Wind, rain, and temperature changes have gradually shaped the rock until it reached its current form, which is distinctly different from the surrounding stones and hills. This uniqueness attracts hikers, photographers, and those exploring the lesser-known parts of Brač.

There is no conventional tourist road leading to the rock. Most visitors arrive via gravel paths from the direction of Nerežišća or along old shepherd trails through the island's interior. The final stretch of the journey is on foot across rocky terrain and dry stone walls. With no houses, restaurants, or shade in the vicinity, the entire area feels very isolated and markedly different from the coastal part of Brač.

From the area around Koloča, there are expansive views of much of the island's interior, and on clear days, one can see the southern coast of Brač, the Hvar Channel, and the higher island ridges. The site is particularly striking in the evening when the sun highlights the relief of the rock and the white Brač stone surrounding it.

Koloč is not a developed tourist attraction nor a site with signage or infrastructure. This lack of facilities makes the visit feel more like an exploration of a hidden part of the island rather than a typical excursion. During the summer months, it is essential to bring sufficient water, as there are no amenities or natural shade nearby.

Among those who enjoy hiking and exploring Brač, Koloč has long been recognised as one of the most unusual natural formations on the island, precisely due to the shape that inspired its name and the landscape that appears almost entirely barren around it.
