Pučišća Renaissance Towers | Stone Defensive Towers by the Pučišća Bay

Pučišća is known for its numerous stone Renaissance towers that can still be seen along the waterfront and in the old parts of the town. Most of the towers were built between the 15th and 16th centuries, during a time when coastal towns on Brač were often exposed to pirate attacks and Ottoman raids. Wealthier families in Pučišća constructed defensive towers alongside their homes to protect their people and property.

The towers are made of white Brač stone, for which Pučišća is known today, giving the town a distinct appearance compared to most Dalmatian coastal towns. Instead of an open waterfront and low houses, the Pučišća bay features massive stone structures with narrow windows, thick walls, and characteristic defensive details.

There were once more than ten towers in Pučišća, but some have not been preserved in their original form. The most famous and best-preserved is the tower of the Akvila family, located right by the waterfront and easily recognizable by its tall stone tower above the sea. This tower is now one of the most photographed parts of the town.

A walk through Pučišća illustrates how the towers were connected to the rest of the town. Most were not built as standalone fortifications but as part of residential houses and stone complexes by the sea. This gives the entire old town core a compact and enclosed appearance, especially in areas with narrow stone streets.

Some of the towers have been restored and are used as private accommodations, restaurants, or residential spaces, while others have mostly been preserved externally. They can be best seen during a walk along the waterfront and through the old town towards the Church of St. Jerome.

The Renaissance towers are not organized as a separate tourist attraction with tickets or guided tours; rather, they are part of the everyday scenery of the town. Therefore, they are best experienced through a leisurely walk in Pučišća, especially in the evening when the white stone and towers stand out against the sea and the light of Pučišća bay.
