Pučišća Renaissance Towers | Stone Defensive Towers by Pučišća Bay

Pučišća is renowned for its numerous stone Renaissance towers, which are still visible along the waterfront and in the older parts of the town. Most of these towers were constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries, during a time when coastal settlements on Brač were frequently subjected to pirate attacks and Ottoman raids. Wealthier families in Pučišća built defensive towers alongside their homes to protect their people and property.

The towers are made from the white Brač stone, for which Pučišća is well-known, giving the town a distinct appearance compared to many other coastal Dalmatian towns. Instead of open promenades and low houses, the area around Pučišća Bay features massive stone structures with narrow windows, thick walls, and characteristic defensive details.

There were once more than ten towers in Pučišća, although some have not survived in their original form. The most famous and best-preserved is the Akvila family tower, located right by the waterfront, easily recognised by its tall stone tower overlooking the sea. This tower is now one of the most photographed parts of the town.

A stroll through Pučišća reveals how the towers were integrated with the rest of the town. Most were not built as standalone fortifications but as part of residential houses and stone complexes by the sea. As a result, the entire historic core appears compact and enclosed, particularly in areas with narrow stone streets.

Some of the towers have been restored and are now used as private accommodation, restaurants, or residential spaces, while others have largely been preserved in their external form. The best views of them can be enjoyed during a walk along the waterfront and through the old town towards the Church of St. Jerome.

The Renaissance towers are not organised as a separate tourist attraction with entrance fees or guided tours; rather, they are part of the everyday landscape of the town. For this reason, they are best experienced through a leisurely walk in Pučišća, especially in the evening when the white stone and towers stand out beautifully against the sea and the light of Pučišća Bay.
