Quarries in Pučišća | White Brač Stone and Stoneworking Tradition

Pučišća is the most recognized location on Brač associated with stone processing and a stoneworking tradition that has lasted for centuries. In the vicinity of the town, some of the most famous Brač quarries are located, from which white Brač stone is extracted and used in numerous buildings in Croatia and around the world. The stone from Pučišća and its surroundings is known for its light color, strength, and ability to be precisely worked, making it suitable for facades, staircases, squares, churches, and restoration work.

The quarries are situated above and around Pučišća, primarily along local roads leading into the interior of the island. Most active quarries are not set up as typical tourist attractions with receptions or organized tours; rather, they are working industrial sites where stone is still extracted and processed daily. Therefore, access to certain locations may require permission or an organized tour.

The most well-known quarry in the area is Veselje, from which part of the most famous Brač stone used in numerous representative buildings originates. The tradition of stone extraction is also the reason why Pučišća hosts the renowned Stoneworking School, the only secondary school of its kind in Croatia.

The drive to the quarries clearly illustrates how stoneworking has shaped the entire landscape around Pučišća. Along the road, large stone blocks, processing machines, and parts of open pits can be seen, resembling large white terraces in the hillside. The contrast between the white stone and the pine forest surrounding the quarries is particularly striking.

Some local agencies and guides organize tours of the quarries and the Stoneworking School during the summer, where visitors can observe the stone processing methods, tools, and part of the tradition that has shaped Pučišća. Such tours typically include stories about the history of Brač stone, its export, and the famous buildings where it has been used.

It is important to note that active quarries are not suited for typical tourist walks. The terrain is often dusty and exposed to the sun, so closed footwear and sufficient water are recommended for visits, especially during the summer. Additionally, some locations are not accessible without prior notice or a guide.

Quarries are not typical tourist attractions like beaches or promenades, but they effectively explain why Pučišća appears different from most places along the Adriatic. Almost the entire town is built from the same stone that is still extracted a few kilometers above the town.
