Quarries in Pučišća | White Brač Stone and the Tradition of Stone Processing

Pučišća is the most notable location on Brač associated with stone processing and a stone-cutting tradition that has persisted for centuries. In the surrounding area, some of the most famous Brač quarries can be found, from which the white Brač stone is extracted, used in numerous buildings across Croatia and beyond. The stone from Pučišća and its surroundings is recognised for its light colour, durability, and the ability to be finely worked, making it suitable for façades, staircases, squares, churches, and restoration projects.

The quarries are located above and around Pučišća, primarily along local roads leading into the island's interior. Most active quarries are not set up as typical tourist attractions with receptions or organised tours; rather, they are operational industrial sites where stone is still extracted and processed daily. Consequently, access to certain locations may require permission or an organised visit.

The most well-known quarry in the area is Veselje, which supplies part of the most recognised Brač stone used in many prominent buildings. The tradition of stone extraction is also the reason why Pučišća is home to the renowned Stone-Cutting School, the only secondary school of its kind in Croatia.

The drive towards the quarries vividly illustrates how stone masonry has shaped the entire landscape around Pučišća. Along the road, large stone blocks, processing machinery, and sections of open pits can be seen, resembling vast white terraces in the hillside. The contrast between the white stone and the surrounding pine forest is particularly striking.

During the summer, some local agencies and guides organise tours of the quarries and the Stone-Cutting School, where visitors can observe the stone processing techniques, tools, and aspects of the tradition that have shaped Pučišća. These tours typically include narratives about the history of Brač stone, its export, and the notable buildings where it has been used.

It is important to note that active quarries are not suited for conventional tourist walks. The terrain is often dusty and exposed to the sun, so sturdy footwear and sufficient water are advisable, especially during the summer months. Additionally, some locations are not accessible without prior notice or a guide.

While the quarries are not typical tourist attractions like beaches or promenades, they provide a clear explanation of why Pučišća appears different from most places along the Adriatic. Almost the entire town is constructed from the same stone that is still quarried just a few kilometres above the settlement.
