Church of St. Roch – Viewpoint and One of the Most Important Shrines in Sutivan
The Church of St. Roch is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Sutivan and has held special significance for the local residents for centuries. Located on a hill above the center of Sutivan, it dominates the landscape and offers one of the most beautiful views of the town, the Brač Channel, and the nearby coast.
The church was built in the 17th century as a votive church following several outbreaks of plague that affected Sutivan. Saint Roch, the protector against infectious diseases, has since been regarded as one of the most revered saints in the area and the heavenly protector of Sutivan.
A short walk from the town center leads to the church, where the stone bell tower and the building's elevated position attract attention upon arrival. Inside the church, there is a wooden statue of Saint Roch, one of the most valuable sacred objects in Sutivan. According to local tradition, the saint protected the town from the plague, and his statue continues to play an important role during the traditional procession held on August 16 in honor of Saint Roch. During this time, the statue is carried through the town, and the celebration gathers residents, expatriates, and numerous visitors.
Next to the church is an old local cemetery, which further attests to the long history of Sutivan. The church also houses valuable votive offerings from maritime families, among which ship models donated by sailors in gratitude for safe returns from the sea stand out. Among these is one of the oldest votive ship models on the Croatian Adriatic coast.
