St. Roch's Church – Viewing Point and One of Sutivan's Most Important Shrines

St. Roch's Church is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Sutivan and has held special significance for the local community for centuries. Perched on a hill above the centre of Sutivan, it dominates the landscape and offers one of the most stunning views of the village, the Brač Channel, and the nearby coastline.

The church was built in the 17th century as a votive church following several outbreaks of plague that affected Sutivan. St. Roch, the patron saint against infectious diseases, has since been regarded as one of the most revered saints in the area and the heavenly protector of Sutivan.

A short walk from the village centre leads to the church, where the stone bell tower and the building's elevated position immediately capture attention. Many visitors come specifically for the panoramic views available from the church grounds. From this vantage point, one can see Sutivan's harbour, the rooftops of stone houses, and the channel separating Brač from the mainland.

Inside the church, there is a wooden statue of St. Roch, one of the most valuable sacred items in Sutivan. According to local tradition, the saint protected the village from the plague, and his statue plays an important role during the traditional procession held on 16th August in honour of St. Roch. During this time, the statue is carried through the village, and the celebration brings together residents, expatriates, and numerous visitors.

Adjacent to the church is an old local cemetery, which further attests to Sutivan's long history. The church also houses valuable votive offerings from maritime families, among which are notable ship models donated by sailors in gratitude for safe returns from the sea. Included among these is one of the oldest votive ship models on the Croatian Adriatic coast.

Due to its history, location, and cultural significance, St. Roch's Church today represents one of the most important sites to visit during a stay in Sutivan. The blend of spiritual heritage, local traditions, and breathtaking views makes it an essential stop for anyone wishing to learn about the authentic history of the area.
