Bristova Beach – A Quiet Cove and Bogomolje Harbor on the Northern Coast of Hvar
Bristova Beach is located in a deeply recessed cove on the northern side of eastern Hvar, a few kilometers south of Bogomolje. Unlike many small coves in this part of the island that are accessed via dirt roads or by boat, Bristova is accessible by car via a local road, making it one of the more practical choices for swimming near Bogomolje.
At the end of the cove, there are smaller pebbly areas suitable for swimming, a few houses and apartments, while the eastern side is arranged as a harbor. Bristova is, in fact, the traditional harbor of Bogomolje, where a small beach, local moorings, and a calm anchorage coexist.
There is no classic tourist center, beach bars, or large organized beach. The main reasons to visit are the clean sea, tranquility, easier road access, and the natural environment of the northern coast of Hvar.
Bristova is the Old Harbor of Bogomolje
Bristova is not just a beach.
It is a harbor of Bogomolje, which has represented the settlement's outlet to the sea for centuries. Bogomolje is located inland on the island, approximately two kilometers from the coast and about 250 meters above sea level, so the surrounding coves have always had an important connection to fishing, boats, and transport.
A pier was built in Bristova in 1911, and the current spatial plan of the Municipality of Sućuraj designates it as a harbor open to local public traffic.
As a result, the cove appears somewhat different from completely natural neighboring coves. On one side, there are moorings and a concreted shore, while the more natural pebbly areas are used for swimming further from the harbor section.
Pebble Beach at the Bottom of the Cove
The most pleasant area for swimming is the inner part of Bristova.
The shore is predominantly pebbly and rocky, with smaller beaches between houses and natural parts of the coast. The pebbles are typical for this part of Hvar, making entry into the sea easier than from rocky sections of the shore.
The seabed in most of the cove transitions to sand, which confirms its long-standing use as an anchorage. Due to the sandy bottom, the sea in shallower areas takes on lighter blue and green tones on sunny days.
However, one should not expect a wide sandy beach. It is most accurate to describe Bristova as a small pebble beach in a cove with a sandy seabed.
Entry into the Sea and Depth
Entry into the sea from the pebbly areas is generally easy.
In the inner part of the cove, the depth increases gradually compared to the open rocky shores, making Bristova pleasant for relaxed swimming and suitable for families with children who can already enter the sea independently.
Near the harbor, attention should be paid to boats and local maritime traffic. Therefore, it is better to choose a part of the cove that is away from the moorings and the concreted operational shore for swimming.
If arriving with small children, the pebbly end of the cove is much more practical than the area near the pier.
A Quiet Cove Without Large Tourist Crowds
Bristova is more developed than Vela Pogorila or some completely wild coves of Bogomolje, but it still does not have the character of a classic tourist destination.
Along the sea, there are a few houses and apartments, while the surroundings are dominated by Mediterranean vegetation and rocky slopes.
This gives the cove a good balance: it is not completely isolated and hard to reach, but neither is it overcrowded with tourist infrastructure.
It is most suitable for guests who want to spend a few hours by the sea without music from beach bars, queues for sun loungers, and a large concentration of bathers.
Natural Shade
Along part of the beach and houses, Mediterranean greenery grows, but the amount of natural shade depends on the location and time of day.
One should not count on a large continuous belt of dense pine forest immediately above the entire beach.
For a full day stay during the summer months, it is advisable to bring an umbrella or other sun protection.
Due to its northern orientation, certain parts of the cove remain without direct sunlight earlier in the afternoon, which can be very pleasant during the hottest hours.
How to Get to Bristova
Bristova can be reached from Bogomolje by car.
From the settlement, a local road descends towards the northern coast. Road access is one of the major advantages of Bristova compared to the surrounding coves.
The drive is short, but the road descends from the interior of the island to sea level, so it should be driven carefully, especially in narrower sections.
Bristova is therefore well-suited for guests who want to explore the beaches around Bogomolje but do not want to drive long dirt roads every day.
Parking
There is no large organized public parking lot in the cove intended for a large number of daily visitors.
Houses and apartments have their own parking spaces, but these are private and should not be used without permission.
For daily visits, it is necessary to find a suitable spot along the local road or an expansion where the car will not block passage, access to houses, or harbor traffic.
Due to limited space during July and August, it is wise to arrive a bit earlier.
No Classic Beach Facilities
Bristova is not an organized city beach.
At the beach itself, one should not expect public showers, toilets, sunbed rentals, or a large beach bar. A few accommodation facilities are located right by the sea, but their amenities are intended for their guests.
The nearest basic services and shops are located towards Bogomolje, so for a longer stay, it is advisable to bring water and everything needed for a day at the beach.
This is especially important if planning to stay for several hours with children.
Bristova as an Anchorage
The cove is also interesting for guests arriving by boat.
Due to its shape, it is well protected from southern and western winds. Anchoring is possible at depths of approximately 2 to 10 meters, and the sandy bottom generally holds the anchor well.
On the eastern side, there is a concreted shore with moorings, where the depth is approximately two meters.
However, Bristova should also be viewed as an active local harbor, so when anchoring and swimming, it is necessary to leave free space for boats and respect the harbor infrastructure.
In stronger northern winds, conditions can be significantly less favorable than in southern winds.
Bristova or Vela Pogorila?
If choosing between the two coves, the difference is primarily in character.
Bristova has better road access, more houses by the sea, a harbor, and the function of a local port. It is more practical if one wants to easily arrive by car and spend a few hours swimming.
Vela Pogorila is more natural and secluded, but access is more challenging, and the cove has even less infrastructure.
For a family or guest for whom ease of access is important, Bristova is the more practical choice. For a completely secluded feel and less developed shoreline, Vela Pogorila has the advantage.
A Good Starting Point for Exploring the Coast of Bogomolje
Bristova is just one of many coves around Bogomolje.
To the east are Vela and Mala Pogorila and other smaller coves, while to the west are Zavala, Solotiša, and Gačice.
This makes the area particularly worthwhile for guests staying several days and wanting to try a different swimming spot each day.
There is no need to rush through all the coves in one day. In this part of Hvar, it is much more pleasant to choose one, bring food and water, and stay for a few hours.
Who Will Enjoy Bristova Beach the Most?
Bristova is a good choice for guests who want a quiet beach but do not want complicated access.
It is suitable for couples, families, guests staying in Bogomolje, and sailors looking for a sheltered cove with anchoring and mooring possibilities.
It is not ideal for those seeking a completely wild shore without houses and boats or for guests who need beach bars, sunbeds, and complete infrastructure.
It is best experienced as a small harbor of Bogomolje with a pebble bathing area, clear water, and a peaceful island ambiance.
